Harpo was making the rounds plugging his new autobiography, "Harpo Speaks" (an absolute classic). Sadly, he never showed up on WML, but at least we have this priceless segment from the TODAY show with John Charles Daly sitting in as host, gamely attempting to read some passages from Harpo's book in between fits of hysterical laughter. Never before or since has so sophisticated and dignified a man as John Daly been so utterly convulsed by a bunch of wind-up chattering teeth. [NOTE: This clip has been pretty widely available previously, but I've cleaned up the audio and video a bit to justify the upload. It just seemed wrong not to have it on the WML channel!] - Please click here to subscribe to the WML channel if you haven't already you'll find the complete CBS series already posted, and you'll be able to follow along the discussions on the weekday "rerun" videos: 🤍🤍youtube.com/channel/UChPE75Fvvl1HmdAsO7Nzb8w?sub_confirmation=1 Join our Facebook group for WML great discussions, photos, etc, and great people! 🤍🤍facebook.com/groups/728471287199862/
Love Harpo.
In late 1960, John Daly abruptly resigned from ABC News, saying it was over a decision the network made to delay the start of their election night coverage. But I've read that he knew ABC was looking to replace him. Daly still had WML which paid well for what little time it took. He also took "free lace" jobs (we'd call them "gigs" today) such as substituting for Dave Garroway on Today. He was hoping to get the job permanently when Garroway left the show in 1962 but NBC went with Hugh Downs instead.
He would cancelled so fast today😅😅😅 I loved harpo so much
I love Harpo and I think John Daly is simply marvelous as well. I loved him as host of What's My Line.
Harpo was my favorite. Marx brother a talented wonderful person
He really had a routine worked out here.
Don't think this is WML, though.
John Daly was in stitches! Rest in peace, John.
Harpo was really a gentle soul and God love him for all the laughs he gave the world and even today we still laugh at his humor
May 3, 1961 was supposed to be the day for Alan Shepard to make the first ever flight into space on Freedom 7. I believe it was scrubbed after a few hours of waiting in the early morning due to bad weather (back then, there had to be pristine conditions to monitor a launch to watch the rocket in case of problems). This segment of TODAY aired in the 8-9am Eastern Daylight Saving Time period.
Like Larry Fine of Three Stooges
Groucho's son Arthur, once said the only time he ever saw his father cry was at Harpo's funeral.
I feel blessed to have been born at a time you were able to enjoy these wonderfully talented people...Thank you for these awesome posts!
Harpo appeared at a theatre in Glasgow, Scotland to a very appreciative audience. A Glasgow audience is the hardest in the world to play to. At the end of the first week Harpo came out to thank the audience for their overwhelming reception. Only thing is Harpo doesn't talk, he broke character. The audience went crazy, and Harpo who was to play another week didn't. They had to close the theatre to make repairs to the damage the audience had made.
too young for me...but Harpo colud play the Harp
Can anybody identify the smoking gentleman seated next to the young woman in the side shots? He looks so familiar, but I can't place him.
You can’t chase ladies and whistle at them like that now!
To bad Harpo was never a guest on What's My Line?. He could have fooled the blindfolded panel in more than one way, but the audience would have to be prepped beforehand not to gasp. Could have just used his normal voice or use other props to answer as he couldn't "speak".
How was Harpo 72 when this aired and still perfect?
39 people have missing teeth.
