do you ave any thoughts on the Swann security cameras?
If you’re using home automation in homekit, google, Alexa, having changes made across all eco systems will be really powerful! Especially if you are moving pieces of equipment
🤔 Cool! Matter devices just in time for christmas 🎄
Let me try rephrasing my question. Is the P1 motion sensor the new thread device from aqara and will it require the M2 (or similar hub) as a matter bridge in order to communicate with the rest of your smart home or will it be a matter compatible device that can link directly to a matter controller/router (eero pro 6 router, Amazon echo dot, etc)?
I'm a bit confused of this hole does it matter thing ;-) maybe you could help me out. My eco is apple. example: Ikea makes a bulb that is matter compatible. Do i still need there hub in order to use the bulb in homekit? or do i just buy the bulb and be done with it?
I just want my LG AC in SmartThings..
So basically for someone like me running Home Assistant with a zigbee dongle and zigbee2mqtt, matter does not matter - it's just the same thing, only a different protocol? I'm already integrating all the different vendor sensors/lights etc. into the same system, without their hubs...
@ KrAw6n-0pwo&t=5m22s 5:22 , Phillips Hue, Caseta switches... All too expensive and unnecessarily proprietary! Give me an inexpensive 4 Pack of Feit Electric color bulbs from Costco with Matter, as well as an open Source App to control and automate them and I'm good to go!
I am very excited to see this come to the industry as a whole.
I think you missed the whole point of Matter - that you don’t have to selective about what products you buy because for the first time they will have native interoperability. For example I have a significant amount of smart products but exclusively use HomeKit. However I will be able to use Amazon and Google products (securely for the first time) within my home and still only my iPhone, MacBook, HomePods and Apple TV. So yeah it’s a big deal especially for those just starting to build their smart home.
Nice! Some clarification though for matter/thread/aqara. Is the new P1 motion sensor from aqara the thread device they were talking about releasing this year and if so, will it be able to connect with matter borde devices directly(echo dots) or will it still require the hub (M2) for it to connect to the ecosystem using matter? Also assuming we're still waiting on the thread aqara window/door sensors...?
I wouldn't get my hopes high. The same people that proposed Zigbee now are proposing Matter. We all know what a mess is on the market with all the products that implements the zigbee protocol and most likely they will do the same with matter. I find it more like a scheme to rip off consumers for the same stuff.
If you're using a hub like HA or Hubitat, then Matter really makes no difference.
I'm super excited - and I noticed by accident yesterday that both of my Nest Hub v2 Displays are advertising the Thread Border Router to the rest of my network already, I asked a Thread / Google guy on Twitter and he confirmed that Google has been turning on the thread radios on their products in advance of matter. That's exciting news for me.
I went with HomeKit and have no intention of adding Alexa or Google to my home. In fact, once I get an Apple TV I’ll be able to ditch the FireTV stick too. So the whole cross compatibility thing is meh for me. However I am excited at the prospect of more products coming onto the market that I can use in HomeKit without having to go down the Home Assistant path. I’m having a huge amount of fun with all of this, but I think if I need to geek out that much it’ll take the fun out of it.
Sometimes I write routines in Alexa, sometimes in Homelife and sometimes in Smartthings. I hope matter will allow routine changes to replicate through all these systems. I always forget which is controlling which.
Will be more than a decade before Matter matters, zero products = zero care factor....
I’m excited about Matter. Good Update, Steve.
I am painfully sitting on the fence with a leg each side of it 😖. 😂🤣😂 I really don’t know what to expect at the moment. You hear that some manufacturers are not updating existing products already sold to customers and you will have to buy new. I would have thought in this time with the focus being shifted to making things last and not wasting resources, that companies would have rolled out a firmware update for Matter. I know it will potentially improve how our smart homes work, but that is all well and good. I for one regardless of Matter will not be replacing anything that does not work with matter just for that reason. I for one am shifting my focus to the life of a product, value for money, reliability. Matter is a double edged sword, yes it will improve compatibility across eco systems but it also has the chance to make a massive negative impact too.
Great video Steve! This will hopefully be a big step forward for us consumers who see the advantages of the smart home but, like myself, are fatigued by the difficulty of getting different ecosystems to play well together. Early adopters of smart home devices rejoice!!! :-).
