Vladimir Putin compared German tanks deployed in Ukraine to the Nazis sweeping across eastern Europe as he addressed Russia in a symbolic speech on the anniversary of the end of the bitter battle for Stalingrad. The Russian president flew to Volgograd, which was renamed Stalingrad for the day, to take part in memorial events marking 80 years since the end of the devastating siege that helped to turn the tide of war in Russia's favour against Adolf Hitler's army. Mr Putin, who has adopted an almost manic reverence of World War Two, spent more than half of the speech comparing the Soviet Union’s struggle with Nazism to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that will soon enter its second year. The Russian president, who has portrayed the invasion as “liberation” of the Ukrainian people from Western influence, proclaimed that a new “Nazi-like” ideology in Europe is “creating direct threats to our country’s security”. Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to rally Russians around the war in Ukraine on the occasion of Nazi Germany's defeat in Stalingrad 80 years ago, at a ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Soviet victory. "We are again being threatened by German Leopard tanks!" Putin said, in reference to Germany's recent decision to supply advanced Leopard battle tanks to Kyiv. The Russian leader also placed flowers on the grave of the Soviet marshal responsible for defending the city and paid a visit to the main memorial complex in Volgograd, as the city is now called, where he held a minute of silence. During a fiery speech on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin evoked the spirit of the Soviet army that defeated Nazi German forces during the battle of Stalingrad during WWII, vowing that Moscow would defeat Ukraine in the grip of "modern Nazism." During the speech in Volgograd, known as Stalingrad until 1961, Putin criticized Germany for helping to arm Ukraine and said, not for the first time, that he was ready to draw on Russia's entire arsenal, which includes nuclear weapons. "We don't send our tanks to their borders but we have the means to respond, and it won't end with the use of armoured vehicles, everyone must understand that," Putin told an audience of army officers and members of local patriotic and youth groups. President Vladimir Putin says that Russia is being threatened by German tanks "again" as it was during World War II, warning that Moscow is ready to respond to aggression from the West. Speaking on the 80th anniversary of the Red Army's victory over Nazi Germany in the Battle of Stalingrad, Putin compares the Third Reich's invasion of the USSR to Germany's supply of Leopard tanks to Ukraine. Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Oleksii Makeiev told DW Monday that there was no official demand from Kyiv to Berlin to provide fighter jets from Germany, despite some voices in Kyiv calling for warplanes. "We didn't put any request to Germany about fighter jets yet," Makeiev said. When asked if such a request would come in the future, the envoy said it would "depend on the situation on the battlefield. Russia launches a lot of missiles towards Ukrainian cities, towards infrastructure, and the jets are part of our air defense efforts," the Ukrainian ambassador said. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has ruled out any possible deliveries of fighter jets to Ukraine, as he believes it could lead to a wider conflict between NATO and Russia. Although Germany is reluctant to send jets, the Netherlands has reportedly said it would consider sending F-16 fighters to Ukraine if the country's government makes a request. The US, Ukraine's key backer, remains tight-lipped on sending F-16s to the country. "My priorities as ambassador here from the very beginning were armored vehicles, main battle tanks and air defense systems, and artillery units. And we are progressing very good on all priorities," Makeiev said. He added that Ukraine will continue talking to the German government on those four priorities. He also contradicted a recent request by his outspoken predecessor, Andrij Melnyk, who during the weekend called on Germany to supply submarines. "We don't need submarines and cruisers and other UFOs from Germany," Makeiev said. Melnyk, who is now Ukraine's deputy foreign minister, tweeted Saturday that the "world's best" submarines could be used to "kick Russia's fleet out of the Black Sea." The push for jets comes after Germany caved into public pressure and greenlit the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, following weeks of deliberations. Makeiev said Western nations need to speed up their decisions on helping Ukraine, as lives hang in the balance. A major meeting of Ukraine's allies has ended without agreement on whether to send more tanks to Kyiv. Representatives of around fifty countries gathered at a US airbase in Germany to discuss co-ordinating military support. Germany's new defence minister denied blocking the use of its Leopard tanks, which Kyiv has been pushing for, saying such a decision had to be carefully considered. Ukraine says the tanks are needed to break the deadlock in the war. Russia has warned that providing tanks would mark an "extremely dangerous" escalation. The war in Ukraine is driving a wedge between Russian speakers in Germany. Putin’s critics and supporters are fiercely divided. The conflict came to a head on May 9, which marked 77 years since Nazi Germany's surrender. Barricades, strict regulations, and thousands of police on duty: German authorities predicted May 9 would get heated. Commemorated as "Victory Day” in many former Soviet countries, the date marks 77 years since the surrender of Nazi Germany. But due to the war in Ukraine, the occasion took on a whole new meaning. The divide between Putin’s opponents and supporters was brought into sharp focus. Authorities banned the display of Russian and Ukrainian flags in the hopes of avoiding escalation. But emotions were running high at dueling protests, with demonstrators breaking out in verbal confrontations over Russia’s war in Ukraine. DW reporter Oxana Evdokimova shows the divisions in the Russian-speaking community in Berlin and why many Russians in Germany support Putin and the military aggression in Ukraine. #documentary #dwdocumentary #reporter #Ukraine #Russia DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Ukraine may be able to add old Leopard 1 battle tanks from German defense industry stocks to deliveries of modern tanks that Germany and other governments pledged last week. German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit confirmed Friday that “export authorization has been granted” but declined to give numbers or other details, saying that they may become more concrete “in the coming days and weeks.” He told reporters in Berlin that the application from industry to permit delivery of Leopard 1 tanks had been made “some time” ago. Hebestreit's comments came after the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported that the government had cleared the export of the tanks and that they could be sent as soon as the defense industry gets them in working order. It said that two companies, Rheinmetall and FFG, want to prepare dozens of Leopard 1 tanks that could be delivered to Ukraine if it is interested. But it also said that there are issues so far with securing sufficient ammunition for the vehicles. It wasn't immediately clear when any deliveries might be possible, but it appeared unlikely to be a quick process. The Leopard 1, built between the mid-1960s and the mid-1980s, was the first battle tank built for West Germany's Bundeswehr. The German military hasn't had any of the tanks since 2003, Defense Ministry spokesman Arne Collatz said. Germany last week agreed to send 14 modern Leopard 2 A6 tanks from its military's current stocks. Several other European countries have equipped their armies with Leopard 2 tanks, and Germany’s move — which followed weeks of mounting pressure to supply battle tanks — meant that they also can give some of their stocks to Ukraine. The United States has said it will send 31 M1 Abrams tanks. After the tank tussle, Russian President Vladimir Putin's fear has pushed the west into a big warplane dilemma. This is because Ukraine has now placed fighter jets on its weapons wish list for the West. However, Germany has openly spurned Ukraine and warned Western powers. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz even urged western nations not to participate in a "bidding war" for advanced weapons in the midst of a conflict. Spurred by the rapid approval of tanks and Patriot air defence systems, which not long ago were off-limits for export to Ukraine, there is renewed optimism in Kyiv for fighter jets. For now, Germany and the U.S. have declined Ukraine's warplane requests. Italy, another NATO member, has also rejected Ukraine's request for fighter jets. Germany is set to deliver the first of four high-tech air defense systems within "days." German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian population centers highlighted the urgency of delivering air defense systems to Kyiv's forces. The long-promised systems, which are capable of protecting an entire city, were originally slated to be delivered at the end of the year. Monday's deadly strikes, however, have now sped up the delivery timeline. The IRIS-T SLM can defend from approaching missiles at an altitude of up to 20 kilometers (12 miles) and a distance up to 40 kilometers. #Ukraine #Germany #Weapons Subscribe: 🤍 For more news go to: 🤍 Follow DW on social media: ►Facebook: 🤍 ►Twitter: 🤍 ►Instagram: 🤍 ►Twitch: 🤍 Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: 🤍
