25.03.2022

In our new satirical format, we explore this ambivalence and say "sorry" to the world - for minor and major transgressions. Realised and developed by Swiss comedian, writer and director Patrick Karpiczenko, the segments are intended to inform and entertain, especially on social media. The first episode discusses the new museum built by the city of Zurich to display the art collection of controversial arms dealer Emil Bührle - a collection whose legitimate acquisition during the Second World War is in doubt. What many experts consider insufficient provenance research has become a PR disaster for the politically left-leaning city. - swissinfo.ch is the international branch of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). In our satirical video format, Swiss comedian and director Patrick Karpiczenko apologises for Switzerland’s transgressions – this time for so-called golden visas that have been given freely to Russian oligarchs. Why are so many Russian oligarchs staying in Switzerland? How do they avoid getting sanctioned and having their assets frozen? Is Vladimir Putin hiding his children in southern Switzerland? And why does North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un speak Swiss German? In this new episode, Patrick Karpiczenko visits “Little Moscow” in canton Zug, gives a short insight into Swiss hospitality before and after Putin's invasion of Ukraine, and looks into the childhood of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un who went to a Bern school. How Switzerland is trying to combat climate change

The climate strike wave that Greta Thunberg started also swept through Switzerland. While young people from all over the country participate in Fridays for Future events, dozens of start-ups are developing technologies to combat climate change. Part two of our explainer video looks into how the country goes about reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. In the 2019 parliamentary elections, the green parties promising climate action made historic gains. A broader climate movement has sparked research into new technologies. Projects range from carbon-neutral fuels made from sunlight and air to technologies that capture carbon dioxide out of the air and store them in concrete. But the climate movement experienced a setback in June 2021, when a narrow majority of voters rejected a new CO2 law intended to help the government meet its net zero targets. What measures can help Switzerland cut its emissions? And how does the country plan to adapt, in case global warming can't be stopped? Find out in this video. To see how climate change is affecting Switzerland, watch part 1 of this series, here: 🤍 At the United Nations climate change conference (COP26), Switzerland will push for all countries to commit to limit global warming to 1.5°Celsius. But after voters rejected a new CO2 law, can Switzerland credibly ask others to do more? Read our stories: 🤍 - swissinfo.ch is the international branch of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). How to become Swiss

If you have a connection to Switzerland through your family or your partner and want to make it official by becoming Swiss yourself – this is how you can go about it. The Swiss passport can seem difficult to get. In this 'Switzerland Explained' video we describe how to kickstart the application process if you're living abroad and how to find out if you’re eligible for a fast-track application procedure. There are three ways of becoming Swiss: by birth (having a Swiss parent), marrying a Swiss or living in Switzerland for at least ten years. Being born in Switzerland doesn’t mean you automatically get a Swiss passport. The process can cost hundreds and even thousands of francs and takes up to two years. If you're on welfare or have a criminal record, you’re excluded. In 2018, 42,500 people acquired Swiss citizenship. In 2017, 44,900 people were naturalised - so it is doable with the right information. This video should help point you in the right direction.  - swissinfo.ch is the international branch of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). How does asylum work in Switzerland

Switzerland has a humanitarian tradition and deals with relatively more asylum requests than other European countries, given the size of the population. Over 14,000 applications were submitted in 2019 and about a third of these people were admitted provisionally. However, migrants heading for Europe often prefer to go to neighbouring Germany and France. The Swiss asylum authorities say a procedure that quickly sends failed applicants back home deters them. If people are recognised as refugees, they might get help with living costs and finding a job, but the road to integration is a long one. What is it like to work in Switzerland?

Switzerland has a strong economy, low inflation, low national debt and a low unemployment rate. It’s hard to believe that only a few generations ago, Switzerland was poor and many had to leave to find work abroad. In this episode of 'Switzerland Explained' we look at how the job market has dramatically transformed since then and continues to change. In the 19th century, the country’s textile and chemical industry started taking off, followed by the machine industry and the banking sector. But it was only after World War II that people living in poor cantons stopped seeking work in other countries as a matter of course. Today Switzerland has become an internationally popular workplace, with jobs in information services, finance, or pharmaceuticals as well as in the clothing or gastronomy sector. It’s home to many global companies and international organisations. The average wage for a full-time job is CHF6,500 ($7,190) per month. But the cost of living in Switzerland is high.  A major factor in the stability of the Swiss workforce is the country's vocational education and training system. Although unemployment rose in 2020 due to the pandemic, Switzerland generally has one of the lowest youth unemployment rates in Europe, which in 2019 amounted to around 4.58%.  - swissinfo.ch is the international branch of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).
