Silkworms Spin Cocoons That Spell Their Own Doom | Deep Look

Those precious silk garments in your closet were made by the caterpillar of a fuzzy white moth – thousands of them. Silkworms spin a cocoon with a single strand of silk up to ten city blocks long. Humans have bred these insects into weaving machines that can no longer survive in the wild. SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! 🤍 Please join our community on Patreon! 🤍 DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. — The sumptuous silk in your satiny sheets and glamorous gowns comes from humble beginnings – a caterpillar of the domesticated silk moth. For almost five thousand years, people have raised silkworms for their unique, shimmering material. In just a few days, these caterpillars produce one fine thread of silk one kilometer long, and intricately weave it into their cocoons. For most silkworms in captivity, this is where their journey ends. To preserve the integrity of the continuous silk thread in each cocoon, silk farmers kill the pupa inside the chrysalis by boiling, steam, or sun. Then the strands are loosened in hot water and unwound by hand using specialized spinners and silk harvesting tools. This raw silk is then gathered onto large spools and refined into commercially valuable threads. It can take up to 2000 silkworms to make one silk dress. Today, the silk industry is valued at more than $10 billion globally, but it is more than just a luxury item. Silk is pound-for-pound stronger than steel, and it is now used in medicine to heal bones and tendons. Our five thousand year love affair with this extraordinary material continues to hold silkworms captive until we learn to spin silk better than they can. – What other insects produce silk? Animal-produced silk is actually quite common in the natural world. Spiders (of course), fleas, webspinners, caddisflies and even some ants and bees make silk. But only the silk made by the caterpillar of the domestic silk moth is widely cultivated by humans. – Are silkworms edible? Yes! Silkworms are enjoyed as a nutritious snack in many countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, China and Madagascar. – Where do wild silk moths live? Domestic silk moths (Bombyx mori) can’t survive in the wild without help from humans, but their cousins – the wild silk moth (Bombyx mandarina) can be found in Asia, in countries like China, Korea and Japan. -+ More great Deep Look episodes: The Curious Webspinner Insect Knits a Cozy Home 🤍 Is a Spider's Web a Part of Its Mind? 🤍 -+ Shoutout! 🏆Congratulations🏆 to the first 5 (well, 6, we missed R Alan!) fans on our Deep Look Community Tab to correctly answer our GIF challenge! Silk worm farming in India: how your silk is made

Ever since human being invented clothes, a variety of fibres have been discovered or invented to suit changes in time climate and fashion. Silk is one out of many fabrics that have been invoked over millennia despite drastic changes in our taste. Since it was discovered fine strong lustrous silk has been wooing the world. The cultivation of silk and the craft of silk weaving are even more fascinating we thought it would be interesting to get an insight into the story of a silk thread, let's begin with the backbone of sericulture the silkworm. Commercial silk is obtained by cultivating different species of silkworm the most widely and most commercially used species is Bombyx Mori native to Asia. Silkworm are soft bodied and slow-moving and relatively fast growing insects like other insects silkworm to go through four stages of development egg, Larva, pupa and adult. The larva is a caterpillar, the pupa is what the silkworm changes into after spinning its cocoon before emerging as a month. How Mountains Of Worm Cocoons Are Turned Into Expensive Silk In Vietnam | Big Business

Silk craft villages have dotted Vietnam for hundreds of years. They make silk by hand in a tedious 30-step process. Craftspeople feed the silkworms every four hours so they spin brilliantly yellow cocoons. And turning those cocoons into silk is even more delicate work. In the 2010s, as cheaper, fake silk flooded the market and young textile workers moved to the big cities, this local craft started dying out. But one village turned things around, banding together into one cooperative called HanhSilk. We head to northern Vietnam to learn how Nam Cao village saved its big business of silk. Silkworm lifecycle: worm to cocoon

This video shows from small worms to cocoon. Here is a video of a moth emerging from the cocoon: 🤍 And finally, moths mating: 🤍 🤍 Recap of the silkworm/moth lifecycle: Starting from tiny eggs from the previous year, about 1 mm in diameter, hatch tiny little black thread-like worms 1-2mm long. The worms only eat Mulberry tree leaves, and over about 4 weeks, grow fat and plump to a size similar to an adult middle finger. Then over several days they spin cocoons around them from their saliva which becomes a continuous strand of silk over a mile long. In captivity, one of two things happens next. In order to harvest and use the long unbroken silk strand, the moth inside must be killed, typically by boiling. (I don't do that!) The alternative is to let the moths emerge after about 2 weeks. The act of the moth emerging from the cocoon effectively breaks the single silk strand into many short pieces, making it much less valuable and useful. Domesticated silk moths are not capable of flight, though they may beat their wings furiously as they walk around or mate. After mating, female moths will lay hundreds of eggs before dying within a few days. If stored in a cool place the eggs will stay unhatched until the next spring, when we can again enjoy this ~7 week diversion and give away as many worms as interested neighbors want...

I went to a place called Shaowo Town in Guizhou to see how and why the locals are raising thousands and thousands of silkworm. To be honest, I was pretty worried about filming this video. Silk Worm farming and harvesting process - How is silk made in China? silk production process steps

How Silk is Made ? Silk Worm farming and harvesting process - How is silk made in China? silk production process steps Click Here To Subscribe : 🤍 The silkworms are fed with mulberry leaves, and after the fourth moult, they climb a twig placed near them and spin their silken cocoons. The silk is a continuous filament comprising fibroin protein, secreted from two salivary glands in the head of each worm, and a gum called sericin, which cements the filaments. The sericin is removed by placing the cocoons in hot water, which frees the silk filaments and readies them for reeling. This is known as the de gumming process.[8] The immersion in hot water also kills the silkmoth pupa. Single filaments are combined to form thread, which is drawn under tension through several guides and wound onto reels. The threads may be plied to form yarn. After drying, the raw silk is packed according to quality. Stages of production The stages of production are as follows: The female silkmoth lays 300 to 500 eggs. The silkmoth eggs hatch to form larvae or caterpillars, known as silkworms. The larvae feed on mulberry leaves. Having grown and moulted several times, the silkworm extrudes a silk fibre and forms a net to hold itself. It swings itself from side to side in a figure '8', distributing the saliva that will form silk. The silk solidifies when it contacts the air. The silkworm spins approximately one mile of filament and completely encloses itself in a cocoon in about two or three days. The amount of usable quality silk in each cocoon is small. As a result, about 2,500 silkworms are required to produce a pound of raw silk.[9] The intact cocoons are boiled, killing the silkworm pupa. The silk is obtained by brushing the undamaged cocoon to find the outside end of the filament. The silk filaments are then wound on a reel. One cocoon contains approximately 1,000 yards of silk filament. The silk at this stage is known as raw silk. One thread comprises up to 48 individual silk filaments. Why Lotus Silk Is So Expensive | So Expensive | Business Insider

Lotus silk is one of the rarest fabrics in the world. Produced only in small scale across Cambodia, Myanmar, and more recently Vietnam, this natural fibre is only extracted by a few skilled craftspeople across the world. But making this "silk" isn’t easy. Extracting enough lotus silk for one scarf can take two months, and the final product can cost 10 times as much as regular silk. So just how is it made, and what makes it so expensive? Silk Farming (Sericulture) | How Silk is made from Silkworm

Sericulture is the process of cultivating silkworms and extracting silk from them. The caterpillars of the domestic silkmoth (also called ‘Bombyx mori’) are the most commonly used silkworm species in sericulture. Other types of silkworms (such as Eri, Muga, and Tasar) are also cultivated for the production of ‘wild silks’.  Sericulture is a very important domestic industry in many countries. India and China are the world’s leading producers of silk. The silk output of these two countries combined accounts for over 60% of the global production. _ DISCLAIMER: Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, commenting, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. How Silk is Made | Making of Silk thread from silkworm cocoons

Have you ever imagines How silk is Made? This video shows the steps of Making of Silk thread from silkworm cocoons and production of raw silk filaments and skeins. Silk production totally depends on the tiny creature known as the silkworm, which is the caterpillar of the silk moth Bombyx mori. It feeds solely on the leaves of mulberry trees. Only the healthiest moths are used for breeding. Their eggs are categorized, graded, and meticulously tested for infection. Unhealthy eggs are burned. The healthiest eggs may be placed in cold storage until they are ready to be hatched. Once the eggs are incubated, they usually hatch within seven days. They emerge at a mere one-eighth of an inch (3.2 mm) long and must be maintained in a carefully controlled environment. Under normal conditions, the eggs would hatch once a year in the spring when mulberry trees begin to leaf. The silkworms feed only the leaves of the mulberry tree. The mulberry leaves are finely chopped and fed to the voracious silkworms every few hours for 20 to 35 days. During this period the worms increase in size to about 3.5 inches (8.9 cm). They also shed their skin, or molt, four times and change color from gray to a translucent pinkish color. When the silkworm starts to fidget and toss its head back and forth, it is preparing to spin its cocoon. As the worm twists its head, it spins a double strand of fiber in a figure-eight pattern and constructs a symmetrical wall around itself. The fibroin is held together by sericin, a soluble gum secreted by the worm, which hardens as soon as it is exposed to air. The result is the raw silk fiber, called the bave. The life of the worm is ended by the process of 'stoving' or 'stifling' in which the cocoons are heated. Some of the cocoons are preserved so that the pupa or chrysalis inside them develop into moths for further breeding. The filature is in the factory in which the cocoons are processed into silk thread. In the filature the cocoons are sorted on the bases of their color and size, so that the finished product can be of uniform quality. The cocoons must then be soaked in hot water to loosen the sericin. The silk is about 20% sericin, only 1% is removed at this stage. This way the gum facilitates the following stage in which the filaments are combined to form silk thread, or yarn. Reeling may be achieved manually or automatically. The cocoon is brushed to locate the end of the fiber. It is threaded through a porcelain eyelet, and the fiber is reeled onto a wheel. Meanwhile, diligent operators check for flaws in the filaments as they are being reeled. As each filament is nearly finished being reeled, a new fiber is twisted onto it, thereby forming one long, continuous thread. Sericin contributes to the adhesion of the fibers to each other. The raw silk filaments, are reeled into skeins. These skeins are packaged into bundles.
