Traditional Bulgarian Folk Arr.: Krassimir Kyurkchiyski | Transc.: Luísa Carvalho From the original recording at 'Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares' (1991) Made with Sibelius Download of this PDF available here: 🤍 I transcribed this as a study; feel free to use, and hope it can aply well for you and your purposes. :) Notes on the transcription: ⦁ One of the interpretative characteristics of this recording is its lack of pulse and clear time signatures. The rythims were written in a aproached way based on the audition of the original recording, but can be interpreted somewhat freely. This note aplies specially to the ornamentations realized by the solo voice. ⦁ By the time of this transcription, there was an only version of the text available online at lyricstranslate.com, which was the source used here for the transliteration, with some adaptions made necessary when the text did not match the pronounce of the recording. As I do not pursue any reliable knowledge on the bulgarian language, there might be some imperfections on the text; apologies for that! Same aplies to the translations, which were elaborated from the same source, along with comparisions to translations gently provided by some YouTube comments of bulgarian users. (thanks guys!) (Edit: at 2:25, a bug showed a "mf" kind out of nowhere, and at 0:17 the A-flat on the lower voice would be better written off as a G-sharp. [how awkward, hehe]. I corrected both on the PDF!) Notation of the ornaments: ⦁ (tr) sounds almost as the western trill, but probably is produced by another vocal technique which produces a similar effect, but with non-tempered intervals. ⦁ turn with a '+' = execution of multiple turns over the note. An aproximate translation of the lyrics stands as: "Godmother Denko, beautiful/Until now you have been my godmother/But from now on, dear Denko,/My first love./You've burnt me, Denko, scalded me/You've made of me, godmother Denko/A dry log/A dry log, Denko, my love,/A walnut tree log..." The term "godmother" here may aply literally, but there is another interpretation that states it could also aply to the daughter of the narrator's godmother, since that in the bulgarian dialect employed in the song the term may suggest this ambiguity - which maybe would make more sense, since the narrator and the girl would then have approximately the same age. The suffering of the narrator comes apparently from the fact of being stricken by a prohibited passion, since his love for Denko would be considered pecaminous in their society, as they would have been raised almost as relatives. Other important note about the lyrics is the metaphor on the walnut tree log. "Burnt as a walnut tree log" suggests an especially stricking emotion, since it's a kind of wood that would be very difficult to burn. Summer Night Music 2002 - Spirits of Music Open air at the Marktplatz Leipzig, Germany The Bulgarian Voices Angelite Krassimir Kyurkchiyski – Kalimanko Denko Watch the full program: 🤍 Spirits of Music is an unusual musical journey through the centuries, with stops on all continents. Inspired by their creators' different faiths, the works on the program have a strong religious background and are moving examples of the emotional power and effect of music. Internationally renowned soloists and ensembles as Bobby McFerrin (a ten-time Grammy Award winner, he is one of the world’s best-known vocal innovators and improvisers, a worldrenowned classical conductor), Nigel Kennedy (one of the world’s leading violin virtuosos), Sibylla Rubens (has emerged as one of the most compelling lyric sopranos of her day) or the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig will perform popular works from the European music tradition, encompassing Bach, Mozart and Verdi. Many magnificent examples of religious music come from artists as Kroke (playing and composing with the realm of authentic Jewish music), the Kuumba Singers (dedicated to the expression of black creativity and spirituality through song), Mari Boine (one of the most impressive folk artists of contemporary time), the Bulgarian Voices Angelite (24 women whose hypnotic chant circles the globe), Vocal Sampling (a Cuban six-man a cappella group which has been described as one of the wonders of the musical world) and the the Ensemble Al-Kindi (is currently rated among the best formations devoted to classical Arab music). With the inclusion of world music, the program will achieve a highly suspenseful juxtaposition of European and non-European music.

Volume II of LE MYSTERE DES VOIX BULGARES won a Grammy Award for a "Best Traditional Folk Recording" in 1990, In 1994 the CD named "Ritual" was nominated for Grammy award in class "Folklore". Bulgarian folk singers whose eerie harmonies, whoops, hollers and rhythmic complexity meld into an unforgettable performance "...when they open their voices out come timeless melodies and rich, strange harmonies that make every hair on your body stand on end." I haven't heard anything so astounding before and I think ..is justifiably appropriate..Hypnotic, transcendent, eerie, jubilant beautiful
