Is Nobu's Most Expensive Sushi Worth It?

The omakase menu option at chef Nobu Matsuhisa's namesake sushi restaurants runs nearly $200 per head. With locations in Beverly Hills, Aspen, and NYC, his restaurants count celebs like Justin Bieber and the Kardashian-Jenner clan. That's expensive, but it's by no means the most expensive sushi in the world, let alone New York. We set out to answer whether Nobu is worth the price and how does the quality of Chef Nobu's menu compare to an average New York City sushi restaurant? CNBC Make It compared an average sushi joint in the city to Nobu, where Chef Nobu showed us his spin on his favorite cheap rolls, as well as some of the pricier options on his menu. My wife and I eat sushi for dinner about once a month which I admit isn't necessarily a cheap habit. My usual order at Taro, our go-to place in Brooklyn, is the edomae chirashi bowl which costs $30. It has variety of ten pieces of fish from mackerel to toro (fatty tuna cut from the belly of the fish) and uni (sea urchin) served on a bed of rice and seaweed. I find it a perfect balance between price and value. Our bill usually comes in under $80, tip included. We avoid the more expensive restaurants like Nobu Downtown where a single piece of toro costs $17. A similar cut costs $8.50 at Taro. And Nobu Downtown is by no means the most expensive sushi restaurant in New York, not even close. Dinner at the Hinoki Counter at Sushi Noz in Manhattan consists of a 6-course tasting menu and a selection of nigiri, a single piece of fish served on rice, for $300 per person. The beverage pairing costs an additional $175 per person. A two-hour dinner at Masa costs $595 per person, not including beverages and tax. Thankfully, gratuity is not accepted. For more details check out The Hungry Tourist: ►Instagram: 🤍 ►Facebook: 🤍 NOTE: In saying "Best Sushi in Japan", I'm not saying this particular restaurant is the best sushi in Japan, but that the sushi journey, from Tsukiji fish auction, to the middle man who the best sushi chefs in the world get their tuna from (where we visited), to the omakase style of eating sushi - it's the entire process that's the best in the world of sushi. We started off by going to the Tsukiji Fish Market tuna auction, that takes place early in the morning. The famous fish market is the biggest tuna auction in the world, and the best tuna that you get just about anywhere in the world for top end sushi restaurants comes through Tsukiji Market. We met up with Sushi Master Hiro Sato, who brought us around the market and took us to the Tuna King (Yamaguki), who is known for buying tuna and reselling on the best tuna to the best of the best of sushi restaurants in Tokyo. It was fascinating to have an opportunity to visit Tsukiji Market for the fish auction, and to see the tuna being sliced in front of your eyes. Sushi Arai (鮨 あらい) - For dinner, we had reservations a t one of the best restaurants in Tokyo for sushi, a restaurant called Sushi Arai. Our Best of Tokyo food tour had the entire 8 seater restaurant to ourselves, and it was pure joy to watch the chefs as they assembled each mini plate of food. Then it was time for sushi, and Chef Arai is a master, he literally just flies with his hands, gathering the fish in one hand and the ball of rice in the other, combining each bite with wasabi and molding them together. This was one of the best sushi experiences I’ve ever had in my life, and the quality, balance, and perfection of the sushi, is next level. Price - About 34,000 JPY ($300) per person It was an amazing day of learning about the best sushi in Japan, both from the Tsukiji Market auction side, and the distribution of the tuna, all the way to eating at one of the top luxury sushi restaurants in Tokyo. To most people, WTF means a certain thing; to Master Sushi Chef Hiroyuki Terada, it means a delicious expensive sushi roll made from the most expensive items he can amass. The ingredients in this dish costs over $313.00; in order to sell it at the restaurant, we would need to multiply the cost by 3-4 times, rendering the price to $1000-1200.00. A very costly sushi roll even for the most rich and famous. For the W, he was sent Wagyu Miyazaki A5 beef from Japan from Debragga in NY. This is by far the best money can buy and if you at home want to taste it, you need to give them ring and enjoy. For the T, he used Blue Fin O-Toro, the best tasting, and most expensive part of the tuna you can buy. There is nothing from the ocean that you will ever find that can taste like this. For the F, he used Foie Gras and seared it to combine with the other ingredients. Besides these beautiful tasting ingredients, he also added freshly shaved Summer Black Truffles, Buluga Caviar, Ikura, Microgreens and the real short grain Japanese sushi rice.
