Steve Allen returns to the panel this week to fill in for Fred Allen, who died suddenly of a heart attack the day before. John Daly makes a touching announcement at the beginning of the program to explain, then the program proceeds as usual until the closing, when each of the panelists offers a brief but heartfelt tribute to Fred (Steve Allen's tribute in particular has been quoted many times). Class all around. Still makes me sad every time I watch it. The last segment features Japanese jazz pianist composer/arranger and bandleader, Toshiko Akiyoshi (though not as a mystery guest Akiyoshi wasn't well known enough at this time for the panel to be blindfolded). MYSTERY GUEST: Cyd Charisse [actress in musicals, dancer] PANEL: Arlene Francis, Steve Allen, Dorothy Kilgallen, Bennett Cerf

Just a few among many of Cyd Charisse's best movie dances, in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, THE BAND WAGON, DEEP IN MY HEART, BRIGADOON, IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER, and SILK STOCKINGS, featuring Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, and James Mitchell, in films directed by Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly, Rouben Mamoulian, and Vincente Minnelli. Choreography by Gene Kelly, Michael Kidd, Eugene Loring, and Hermes Pan. This montage was first shown, along with costume sketches (by Mary Ann Nyberg, Walter Plunkett, Helen Rose, and Irene Sharaff) of the above-mentioned musical numbers, in the exhibition I curated in Paris in 2018: COMÉDIES MUSICALES, LA JOIE DE VIVRE DU CINÉMA (MOVIE MUSICALS, A GLORIOUS FEELING) at the Philharmonie de Paris.
Cyd Charisse was an American actress and dancer. After recovering from polio as a child and studying ballet, Charisse entered films in the 1940s. Her roles usually featured her abilities as a dancer, and she was paired with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly; her films include Singin' in the Rain , The Band Wagon , Brigadoon with Gene Kelly and Van Johnson and Silk Stockings . She stopped dancing in films in the late 1950s, but continued acting in film and television, and in 1991 made her Broadway debut. In her later years, she discussed the history of the Hollywood musical in documentaries, and was featured in That's Entertainment! III in 1994. She was awarded the National Medal of the Arts and Humanities in 2006. Early life Cyd Charisse was born Tula Ellice Finklea in Amarillo, Texas, the daughter of Lela and Ernest Enos Finklea, Sr., who was a jeweler. Her nickname "Sid" was taken from her older brother Ernest E. Finklea jr., who tried to say "Sis". It was later given the spelling of "Cyd" by Arthur Freed.
Hi. This is Part 2. There was the quick uptempo beat..but Melody will never die! Here's the slow melodic one, tribute to musical films and amazing dancers for all time. THIS is the other piece that FRED ASTAIRE , this time beautifully partnered by the mighty magical CYD CHARISSE begged to dance to this exquisite and most special off MJ's songs. the Waltz SEEING VOICES, recorded with the RAY CHARLES Choir, and dedicated to the son The Film, BAND WAGON , 1953 ( V. Minelli ), was a big inspiration for a Mj, but this number shot at dusk in Central Park conjures up an entirely different unique atmosphere and essence, and brings that aura of blissful classical melody and entrancing rhythm to new heights. The theme of the song is so important and unique and talks about sign language in a uniquely beautiful way , which blends perfectly with the perfect expression of these two renowned and beloved Masters . ..Speech without sound face to face, hands unbound Weaving the space between friends So, think of them as being As though you were seeing voices..
