There are many organic strategies to combat codling moths: produce resistant varieties, use moth traps made with molasses, wrap the trunk in cardboard traps, employ poultry, or bag the apples. This year, I am using a combination of the last four. Here is how I am using newer tougher bags in place of the nylon pantyhose I have used in the past in order to produce an apple crop free of coddling moths. Time input: one hour to bag about 70 apples. Tino knows that the only thing worse than biting into an apple and finding a caterpillar, is biting into an apple and finding half a caterpillar! If this has ever happened to you, it’s likely the larvae of the Codling Moth, a common pest of apples, pears and even quinces. To control any pest, it’s important to know their lifecycle – Codling Moth are gestating over winter either in the soil below the tree, or the nooks and crannies of the bark and bud unions. Once the weather warms up, the adults emerge, and lay their eggs on the tree or the young fruit. These eggs hatch, and the larvae chomp their way into your harvest, heading into the soil or bark to gestate as the weather heads back into autumn and winter. At this point, the cycle starts again. Tino’s tried a few tricks to get rid of these troublesome pests, but one that has worked well over the last few years is suppression mulching. This involves using a nice, thick layer of organic mulch to prevent the adult moths emerging from the soil after their gestation. Tino builds his mulch layers up like a delicious lasagne: Scrape back existing mulch around root zone Add layer of compost Add layers of cardboard, overlapping around the base of the tree Add another layer of compost Finish of with a nice thick layer of straw based mulch Repeat process two or three times throughout the year Another top Tino top is to wrap hessian around the trunk of the tree – this attracts the adult codling moths (mainly females) towards spring. After leaving this on the tree for a couple of weeks, it can be removed and throw into the bin, and the process repeated Watch Gardening Australia on ABC iview: 🤍 SUBSCRIBE: 🤍 About Gardening Australia: Gardening Australia is an ABC TV program providing gardening know-how and inspiration. Well last night I couldnt decide whether to go boat or beach fishing today. As the fish market prices are generally poor for herring on a Friday, I decided to go beach fishing. When we had the last good run of cod / codling, around 14/15 years ago, I caught plenty on raw prawns, but they were a little soft, so they didnt stay on the hook very well. I decided last night to defrost some prawns, salt them to toughen them up (salting prawn video on my channel) and give them a try today, along with salted mackerel and some fresh mackerel. Well the prawns did the job, the first codling Ive caught beach fishing in a long while. I was well chuffed and made up with it. Ok, it wasnt a monster, and there was a deformity to its head, but it was still a codling!

This is one of the half a dozen pests which left to itself is capable, in a bad year, of destroying 100% of the apple crop. Removing and destroying affected fruits can minimise infestation for the following year, pheremone traps placed in the trees in mid to late May (northern hemisphere) reduce the number of male moths, but mainly act as an indicator to show you when to spray insecticide. As I say, this year we did not spray as there were very few moths showing in the traps and because we are suffering heavily under apids and red spider mites. Our best defence against RSM, which are not touched by most sprays, is ladybirds. If we sprayed against the codling moths the beneficial ladybirds will become 'collateral damage'. Its hard. We are waiting and hoping and removing as many damaged apples as possible. Lets hope if any maggoty apples get through our quality control, customers will be understanding!

CODLING meaning in English | Whats the Meaning of CODLING Definition, Synonyms and use [ Recommended : 🤍 ] CODLING meaning in English | Whats the Meaning of CODLING Definition, Synonyms and use Translation: Translation is the translation of a source-language text into a target-language text that conveys the same meaning. Parts of Speech: Nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions, conjunctions and interjections make up the eight parts of speech in the English language. The word's part of speech reveals its meaning and grammatical function in the context of the sentence. When employed in various contexts, a single word may operate as more than one element of speech. In order to correctly define a word in a dictionary, you must know the components of speech. Noun: When we use the word "noun," we're referring to a person or a location or an object or an idea or a quality. Pronoun: The pronouns I, you, he, she, it, we, they, I, myself, this, that, who, which, and everyone serve as noun substitutes and nouns. Verb: The verb in a phrase conveys a sense of activity or existence. A primary verb is used, and one or more supporting verbs may also be used. "She's a talented singer." There are two verbs here: sing and can.) Number agreement between verb and subject is required in every sentence (both are singular or both are plural). Tense may also be expressed via the use of distinct verb forms. Adjective: A noun or a pronoun is modified or described by an adjective. It generally responds to the query of which one, what sort, or how many there are. (Usually, articles [a, an, the] are categorised as adjectives.) Adverb: Adverbs describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, but never nouns. It generally responds when, where, how, why, under what circumstances, and to what extent. Adverbs often end in -ly. Preposition: A preposition is a word that comes before a noun or pronoun in order to build a phrase that modifies another word or phrase. As a result, a preposition is always included in a prepositional sentence. Almost usually, the prepositional phrase serves as an adjective or an adverb. Conjunction: A conjunction connects two words, phrases, or sentences and expresses the link between them. Coordinating conjunctions join grammatically equivalent elements: and, but, or, not, for, so, and yet. Because, although, while, since, and other subordinating conjunctions link sentences that are not equal: because, although, while, since, and so on. Other sorts of conjunctions exist as well. Interjection: Interjections are words that are used to communicate emotion. It is often followed by an exclamation mark. How To Dig In A Green Manure Crop, Make A Codling Moth Trap And Prune A Feijoa T

00:09:52
04.04.2020

Digging in our lupin bed: It’s best to dig in a green manure crop when no more than 10 per cent of the plants are flowering (or any time earlier). If you leave it any longer, the plants become woody and take too long to break down. Remove netting and hoops if you had nets on, pull the plants out by the roots and lay them back on top of the bed. Use a spade to chop up the plants. It may be worth sharpening your spade first to make the job easier. Use a sharpening stone at a 45 degree angle in a circular motion over both sides of the blade. After chopping the crop up, work over the bed with a fork, lifting the soil to aerate it. Then apply lime and leave. There’s no need to dig the green manure crop in completely. Within 2-3 weeks, the crop will have broken down and the bed will be ready to plant up shortly after that. Making codling moth traps for apple and pear trees: It’s time to get traps on our apple and pear trees to catch the codling moths which will start flying shortly. You need to get the traps on before bud burst. In a bucket mix ½ cup molasses, 1 cup cider vinegar, 5 cups water, small squeeze of dishwashing liquid and a few drops of ammonia. Mix well together. Using a craft knife or pair of scissors cut a hole of around 30-40mm in diameter on either side of a 2-litre milk bottle. Pour the mixture into the bottle to about 5 cms high. This recipe will make 3-4 traps. Secure the lid back on the bottle. Tie from the handle of the bottle onto the V of two sturdy branches using soft-cloth ties so that the trap dangles securely in the middle of the tree. Depending on the size of the tree you may need up to 3 traps in each tree. Pruning a feijoa tree: Before your tree bursts with new growth and flowers, it’s time to give it a prune. Feijoas are pollinated by birds rather than bees, so you need to have the tree as open as possible for them to fly through. We start by removing low growth which creates a problem for the lawn mower and it restricts light to the understorey plants (comfrey and cleaver in our case). Using loppers, remove spindly growth and inward-growing branches. Think of how you want the tree to end up and work towards that. You may need a small pruning saw to help you with larger branches. Never worry about over-pruning as it will grow back and feijoas only bear on new season’s growth anyway. After pruning, add an animal manure and rock dust to the dripline (the circumference of the tree, which is where the tree feeds from).
