Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday suggested the campaign of airstrikes in Syria involving planes, artillery and drones was just "the beginning." Turkey launched the operation, which is also taking place in Iraq, as an initial response to a bombing that occurred in Istanbul earlier this month, which Ankara blames on Syrian militants. The Kurdish groups deny any responsibility. "Our determination to secure all our southern border... with a safe zone is stronger today than ever before," Erdogan told lawmakers in parliament. "While we press ahead with air raids uninterrupted, we will crack down on terrorists also by land at the most convenient time for us." Moscow calls for calm Also on Wednesday, Russia reiterated its stance, calling on Turkey to hold back on launching a full-scale ground offensive against militants in Syria. "We hope our arguments will be heard in Ankara and other ways of resolving the problem will be found," senior Russian negotiator Alexander Lavrentyev said after a fresh round of Syria talks with Turkish and Iranian delegations in Kazakhstan. Lavrentyev also said the United States was guilty of plotting a "destructive" path in northeastern Syria, and that resolving the Kurdish issue would be an important factor in stabilizing the situation in the region. The US has allied itself with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by the YPG Kurdish militia, in the fight against Islamic State in Syria. Washington's alliances have not gone down well in Ankara, though. Russia and Turkey have already been in deep dialogue at various stages of this year, as Ankara seeks a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine, hosting a number of high-profile negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. 'Turkey launches AIRSTRIKES on Northern regions of Syria and Iraq after Istanbul explosion' Turkey launched airstrikes over northern regions of Syria and Iraq, the Turkish Defense Ministry said Sunday, targeting Kurdish groups that Ankara holds responsible for last week's bomb attack in Istanbul. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, reported that the strikes had also hit Syrian army positions and that at least 12 had been killed, including SDF and Syrian soldiers. The observatory said about 25 airstrikes were carried out by Turkish warplanes on sites in the countryside of Aleppo, Raqqa and Hasakah. The ministry cited Turkey's right to self defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter in launching an operation it called Claw-Sword late Saturday night. The Kurdish militant groups have, however, have denied involvement. #airstrike #turkey #istanbulattack Subscribe here: 🤍 TikTok: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 If you wish to purchase any of our clips for commercial use, please visit: 🤍

Watch how the Syrian civil war became the mess it is today. After four-plus years of fighting, Syria's war has killed at least hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. And, though it started as a civil war, it's become much more than that. It's a proxy war that has divided much of the Middle East, and has drawn in both Russia and the United States. Erdogan added that Turkey's air operations against a Kurdish militia in northern Syria were only the beginning and it would launch a land operation when convenient after an escalation in retaliatory strikes. Ankara launched air operations at the weekend in retaliation for an Istanbul bomb attack a week earlier that killed six people, and which it blamed on the YPG. Nobody has claimed responsibility and the PKK and YPG have denied involvement. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said the army had hit 471 targets in Syria and Iraq since the weekend in what he said was Turkey's biggest air operation of recent times. The YPG-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said the Turkish military attacked north and eastern Syria for a third day on Tuesday (November 22), using aircraft, drones and heavy artillery, with civilian infrastructure including hospitals and a school among the targets hit. The United States has allied with the SDF in the fight against Islamic State in Syria, causing a deep rift with Turkey. "If the Dead Could Speak" reveals some of the human stories behind the more than 28,000 photos of deaths in government custody that were smuggled out of Syria and first came to public attention in January 2014. The report lays out new evidence regarding the authenticity of what are known as the Caesar photographs, identifies a number of the victims, and highlights some of the key causes of death. Human Rights Watch located and interviewed 33 relatives and friends of 27 victims whose cases researchers verified; 37 former detainees who saw people die in detention; and four defectors who worked in Syrian government detention centers or the military hospitals where most of the photographs were taken. Using satellite imagery and geolocation techniques, Human Rights Watch confirmed that some of the photographs of the dead were taken in the courtyard of the 601 Military Hospital in Mezze.
A former Royal Netherlands Army soldier trains jihadists in Syria. The man, Dutch-Turkish dual national, named Yilmaz wears his Dutch Army uniform while training foreign fighters from Europe and all over the world. Roozbeh Kaboly, foreign editor of the Dutch National TV program Nieuwsuur (NewsHour) found Yilmaz on his social media page (Instagram) 8 months ago. It took Yilmaz a long time to trust Kaboly and accept to give an interview. In the beginning he even denied that he was from the Netherlands. As it's not safe for reporters in Syria and extremist fighters target them, Nieuwsuur asked an intermediary to do the interview.
… and how it’s getting what it wanted. On Oct. 9, 2019, Turkey launched an attack in northeastern Syria. Turkey made the move shortly after the US announced it would remove some of its troops from the region. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had his eyes on the region for years. Turkey, he argued, needed a “safe zone” to serve as a buffer against the Syrian War happening just across the border. Yet back home in Turkey, there were other factors at play that accelerated his calls for an invasion that involved Erdoğan’s own political survival. The move has recalibrated alliances in the Syrian War and added new uncertainty on the future of the region. 11 years after the violent suppression of peaceful, popular demonstrations, Syria is still mired in war. More than 14 million civilians need humanitarian assistance; and more than 12 million re displaced, including over 6 million outside the country. The UN reports that at least 350,000 have been killed. Meanwhile, tens of thousands are detained, tortured, missing, or disappeared. Currently the Syrian government controls most of the lower two-thirds of the country, while the Kurdish-led “Syrian Democratic Forces” control the north east, and armed groups opposing Damascus control the north west. Many rounds of peace talks have been attempted, and the UN Special Envoy for Syria is working with a committee to draw up a new constitution leading to free and fair elections supervised by the UN. But progress has been elusive.

Syria in the late 1940s and early 1950s was a time of successive military coups. Often, the coup organiser-in-chief was Adib Al Shishakli, a military leader who was president from 1953 to 1954. Al Shishakli controlled the revolving door of Syrian leadership, placing allies in senior positions, rewarding friends and making enemies. In 1953, he won a referendum that made him Syria's president. But just a year later, he was unseated by rivals and went into exile in Brazil. There, in 1964, he was assassinated by a lone Syrian gunman, angered at the former president’s actions ten years earlier. This film follows the life and death of Adib Al Shishakli. This film tells us a story we were not supposed to hear. In it, we see images we were not supposed to see. On November 20, 2013, Iraqi freelance cameraman Yasser Faisal al-Jumaili crossed the Turkish border into Syria with his trusted Syrian fixer Jomah Alqasem. The Syrian war had been raging for two-and-a-half years and now saw the various rebel groups splitting one from another, mostly around ideological differences. The assignment was to access the groups and build a picture of who these men were, away from rhetoric, both on and off duty on the frontlines. For 13 days in Syria, the two reporters filmed the men behind the frontlines: fighters with the Free Syrian Army, Al-Tawhid Brigade, Al-Nusra Front, Ahrar Al-Sham, and even ISIL. Now, in this film, only Jomah lives to tell the tale of their last assignment together. His account of their journey vividly portrays the fragility of being embedded in a fast-changing war environment. Through his story we discover the fascinating highs and lows of Yasser's final assignment. What makes this access extremely rare is Yasser's knack of getting these terrifying groups to let us into their casual, off-duty lives. Perhaps too close. On December 4, 2013, as they tried to leave Syria by road, their car was stopped and Yasser was shot multiple times. His killers remain unknown. In this Al Jazeera exclusive, we discover Yasser - the journalist and the man - from moving accounts of those who knew him best professionally, including Al Jazeera's own correspondents Omar al-Saleh, Jane Arraf and Imran Khan. But Yasser's unique footage, and own mobile phone diary, later smuggled out of Syria by friends and colleagues, stands here as the greatest testament. - Subscribe to our channel 🤍 - Follow us on Twitter 🤍 - Find us on Facebook 🤍 - Check out our website:🤍
