In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Dr. Richard DeClue, STD and Henri de Lubac Fellow in Theology at the Word on Fire Insitute to talk about the Second Vatican Council – Vatican II. This is sometimes a sticking point for new or potential converts to the Catholic faith because of all the in-fighting about Vatican II here, on YouTube, on Twitter, and elsewhere on the Internet. It's tragic that anything would stand in the way of potential converts to the faith so Dr. DeClue joins us this week to debunk some of the myths surrounding Vatican II and to try and get to the why's and the what for's of this important – sometimes polarizing – ecumenical council. Vatican II was the twenty-first ecumenical council and produced sixteen documents: four Constitutions, nine Decrees, and three Declarations. In this lecture, you’ll receive background information on the Second Vatican Council in particular and on ecumenical councils in general. Dr. Richard DeClue, the Cardinal Henri de Lubac Fellow of Theology at the Word on Fire Institute, guides you through the documents and puts to bed the common misconception regarding whether Catholics have a choice in assenting to Vatican II. What constitutes an ecumenical council? An ecumenical council is an extremely rare occurrence, a “solemn” exercise of episcopal power (CCC 884). 75 - Don't Scapegoat the Nouvelle Théologie - Richard DeClue | Catholic Culture Podcast

20.05.2020

It has become fashionable in traditionalist circles to blame all problems in modern theology on the so-called nouvelle théologie, including a range of thinkers such as Henri de Lubac, Karl Rahner, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Hans Küng and Josef Ratzinger. But this is based on a number of misconceptions: about the nature of the nouvelle théologie itself, and about the views held by some of these theologians. Nouvelle théologie is not a unified movement in which everyone held the same views. Some of the “new theologians” were radicals and modernists who wanted the Church to bow to the modern world. Some were orthodox men who wanted to revitalize theology by a return to the sources: the Fathers, Scripture, and St. Thomas (in his own words, not as filtered through the commentators). Others were harder to pin down. A broad-brush approach to the nouvelle théologie has resulted in injustices, perhaps as much to theology itself as to some good Churchmen whose reputations have been tarnished. Even Ratzinger has been dubbed a modernist by a certain trigger-happy trad celebrity. It’s time for an intervention, and theologian Richard DeClue is here to bring some sobriety. “Outside of the Church, there is no salvation” —St. Cyprian of Carthage As the sacrament of salvation, the Church, by her very nature, is called to unite as many people to Christ as possible, for their sake. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus. About the host: Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 22 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. Friends, I have often critiqued what I call "beige Catholicism," a Catholicism which has lost its verve, its sense of self, and its missionary focus. 18.08.2022

Friends, I am delighted to announce the Word on Fire Institute's inaugural conference "Wonder: A Conference on Faith and Science" 🤍. It is an annual opportunity to engage with theologians and other experts on important issues at the intersection of the Catholic faith and secular culture. Our theme for the inaugural conference is something I've spoken a lot about over the years, namely the relationship between faith and science. Nearly 60% of religious believers agree with the statement that religion and science conflict with one another. This tragic confusion is especially prevalent among young people, and is a major reason why many of them disaffiliate from the faith. At this upcoming Wonder Conference, we'll bring together recognized experts in physics, philosophy, technology, theology, and history to discuss how we can clear up this confusion and show the fundamental harmony of faith and science. I'll be speaking along with brilliant writers and scientists like Fr. Robert J. Spitzer, Christopher Baglow, Stephen Bullivant, Richard DeClue, Daniel Kuebler, Karin I. Oberg, Fr. Joachim Ostermann, Lawrence Principe, Fr. Anselm Ramelow, and Tod Worner. The conference is being held in Grapevine, Texas, January 13-14, 2023, and registration is now open at 🤍. I hope to see you there!

This video is a response to Timothy Gordon's August 3, 2020 video titled "Who Is Right About Vatican 2?" 🤍 Summary of Marshall's Content: 1. The documents of Vatican II are part of the ordinary Magisterium and must be accepted. 2. Sacrosanctum Concilium authorized a wise reform of the Roman Rite that would make the Rite more itself, not something else. 3. A Catholic can consider the implementation that came after the Council as unwise, and even as a betrayal of the Council and of liturgical tradition of the Roman Rite. 4. But the documents of the Council itself must be readwhether clear or unclearin a Catholic sense (continuity). That is what determines their true meaning, not the intent of some bishops and their mischievous advisors during the Council, or the equally mischievous legislation that followed the Council. - Marshall Fightlin has been married for over fifty years to the love of his life.  He has two beautiful daughters and five grandchildren.  He is a licensed psychologist, employed at an ecumenical clinic in downtown Duluth, MN.  He has an MA in Counseling from the U of Maine Orono, an MA in Psychology from the Fielding Institute, an MEd and STL from St. Paul's University, Ottawa.  He has taught in the Psychology and Theology Departments at Holy Apostles Seminary and at the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth.  He has written numerous articles in journals such as The International Review of Natural Family Planning, Homiletic & Pastoral Review, and Fidelity. How Christianity Led to Science

00:12:27
05.04.2019

There’s this narrative out there that says that science arose in Christian Europe in spite of the antagonism of the religious authorities against reason. It portrays the scientific revolution as the inevitable triumph of reason over superstition. So that sounds nice enough, but how true is it? Well, one of the first things that stands out for me in considering that is that the rigors of the scientific method did not appear anywhere else in history. No other culture or civilization was able to provide for and encourage the scholarly disciplines enthusiastically enough to produce something as rich as the scientific method. Really think about that. We’re told that human beings have been employing cognitive thinking for about 50,000 years and it wasn’t until about 500 years ago that we make the last major strides towards something like the scientific method. And don’t misunderstand that. There had been scientific like inquiry from long before that, but it isn’t the same as a systematic approach to gathering observations and then interpreting that data in a consistently logical way. Other civilizations had mathematics, natural philosophy, and technology, but none of those things amount to anything as complete or rigorous as the scientific method, which only appeared in Christian Europe during the renaissance aided significantly by the Catholic scholastic forerunners. Based on that knowledge, it should be easy to see that science has not always been some inevitable outcome but, rather, a very elusive step in intellectual inquiry. If Christianity is so incompatible with scientific reason, then how can something that has managed to elude humanity for so long, eventually explode out of backwards, dark age promoting, Christian Europe? Not only is that a really glaring and uncomfortable refutation of the faith vs science narrative, but it is further frustrated by the fact that the list of people that were essential to the advent of the scientific method, in Europe, were pretty much all Christians working under the patronage of… Church institutions.

In this brief video, I respond to some of the thinking of Baptist Pastor, writer, and apologist Dr. Gavin Ortlund at 🤍TruthUnites to explain why I think that a system of theological retrieval as a Protestant is, ultimately, an arbitrary process even with the best of intentions. Special Thanks for Dr. Richard DeClue from 🤍word-on-fire and Dr. Douglas Beaumont of 🤍DouglasBeaumont for their input. Who Is Right About Vatican 2? On a podcast last week, “DeClue’s Views,” Chris and Richard pointed out errors Taylor Marshall made in discussing the sacred Constitutions of Vatican Two. Notwithstanding these errors, Tim defends some of the Traditionalist conclusions (and concedes others) about the weaponized ambiguity softwired into the Council documents. Summarily, Tim’s position constitutes a geometric mean between Marshall’s on one side and Plance’s/DeClue’s on the other; ultimately, he sides with any who advocate the indefectibility of the Roman Catholic Church via the hermeneutic of continuity.
