For the first time in history, a spacecraft has touched the Sun. NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has now flown through the Sun’s upper atmosphere – the corona – and sampled particles and magnetic fields there. NASA Parker Solar Probe - Journey To The Sun


On Aug. 11th 2018, NASA launched the Parker Solar Probe, which will be the first-ever mission to "touch" the Sun. The probe, about the size of a small car, will travel directly into the Sun's atmosphere, about 4 million miles from the surface. The probe will slingshot around Venus, which will help it create a tighter orbit around the Sun, it’s first orbit around the sun will be at 15 million miles, it’s 21st orbit in 2024 will put it at 4 million miles from the sun, and travelling at around 430,000 Kph. NASA's sun-grazing Parker Solar Probe spacecraft again flies by the sun.


As part of its ongoing mission, the Parker Solar Probe flew close to the sun for the fourteenth time. On Sunday (Dec. 11), at a distance of around 8.5 million kilometers, NASA's spacecraft flew by the sun's surface, also known as the photosphere, in order to gather information on the corona, the outer atmosphere of the sun. However, this flyby is not the closest approach for the spacecraft to the sun. The spacecraft will get closer to the sun during subsequent flybys, getting as close as 6,115,500 km from our star's surface. The carbon-composite shield on board the spacecraft is 11.43 centimeters thick and is designed to protect the spacecraft's scientific payload from the harsh space environment without sacrificing its ability to function normally. The main goal of the Parker Solar Probe is to study the sun's outer atmosphere, called the corona, in order to answer one of the most puzzling questions about the star: why is the corona so much hotter than the surface? Stellar physics theories predict that when one travels further into a star's plasma, both the pressure and temperature will rise. However, the corona disproves this common knowledge. The plasma in this layer, however tenuous and dispersed, is actually hotter than the plasma on the photosphere, the layer directly below the corona. While the photosphere, located just 1,600 km below the corona, is 10 million times denser and reaches temperatures of only 10,000 F (5,000 C), the corona may reach temperatures of 1.1 million C or higher. The photosphere blocks out the light from the corona, so you can't see it from Earth until the moon completely blocks out the sun. This only occurs during a total solar eclipse. (Using specialized equipment, scientists may get the same result.) Because of the corona's role in generating the solar wind, a torrent of charged particles that may disrupt communication and power infrastructure on Earth, the Parker Solar Probe must get "up close and personal" with our star to better comprehend it. Since the sun is the only nearby star accessible in this manner, researchers may use what they learn to better comprehend stars considerably distant from Earth. On March 17, 2023, the Parker Solar Probe will make its fifteenth close approach to the sun, traveling around 8.5 million km from the surface of the sun. The spacecraft will make a swoop by Venus later this year to get it into a more solar-aligned position as the mission's completion year of 2025 approaches. NASA's Parker Solar Probe Discovers Natural Radio Emission in Venus' Atmosphere


During a brief swing by Venus, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe detected a natural radio signal that revealed the spacecraft had flown through the planet’s upper atmosphere. This was the first direct measurement of the Venusian atmosphere in nearly 30 years — and it looks quite different from Venus' past. A study published today in Geophysical Research Letters confirms that Venus’ upper atmosphere undergoes puzzling changes over a solar cycle, the Sun’s 11-year activity cycle. This marks the latest clue to untangling how and why Venus and Earth are so different. The data sonification in the video translates data from Parker Solar Probe’s FIELDS instrument into sound. FIELDS detected a natural, low-frequency radio emission as it moved through Venus’ atmosphere that helped scientists calculate the thickness of the planet’s electrically charged upper atmosphere, called the ionosphere. Understanding how Venus’ ionosphere changes will help researchers determine how Venus, once so similar to Earth, became the world of scorching, toxic air it is today. The Parker Solar Probe just made a historic flyby of the Sun. For the first time, the satellite passed through the Alfvén Critical Surface, which is where the Sun's atmosphere ends. These particles can ultimately damage our satellites, like those used for GPS and phone calls. But one the most important questions that Parker needed to answer is where this Alfven Critical surface lies, and in 2021, it made a historic discovery After spending five hours within the upper atmosphere, the probe observed that both the energy and pressure of the Sun’s magnetic field were stronger than that of the particles within it. This meant that the forces from the Sun were strong enough to maintain control of the particles, essentially keeping them close to the center of the sun. However, when Parker rose further away, the reverse was apparent and the forces were no longer strong enough to trap the particles and they were propelled into the Solar System. This was evidence that Parker passed through the Alfven Critical surface, like flying into the eye of a Hurricane where it’s most calm, and then returning to a barrage of wind. The friction and energy of the two opposing forces released heat in quantities more than models had anticipated — similar to the frictional heat released when trying to stop and reverse a moving bicycle tire with your hand. This ocean was spiked with what became known as switchbacks: rapid flips in the Sun’s magnetic field that reversed direction like a zig-zagging mountain road. Venus Shows Its Hot, Cloudy Side 🤍 The single camera instrument, known as the Wide-Field Imager for Parker Solar Probe, or WISPR, is not designed to look directly at the sun, which is far too bright, especially at close distances. NASA | Parker Solar Probe: It's Surprisingly Hard to Go to the Sun


The Parker Solar Probe will be the first-ever mission to "touch" the Sun, traveling directly into the Sun's atmosphere about 4 million miles from the surface. Read the story: 🤍 NASA launch schedule: 🤍 The Sun contains 99.8 of the mass in our solar system. Its gravitational pull is what keeps everything here, from tiny Mercury to the gas giants to the Oort Cloud, 186 billion miles away. But even though the Sun has such a powerful pull, it's surprisingly hard to actually go to the Sun: It takes 55 times more energy to go to the Sun than it does to go to Mars. Why is it so difficult? The answer lies in the same fact that keeps Earth from plunging into the Sun: Our planet is traveling very fast - about 67,000 miles per hour - almost entirely sideways relative to the Sun. The only way to get to the Sun is to cancel that sideways motion. Since Parker Solar Probe will skim through the Sun's atmosphere, it only needs to drop 53,000 miles per hour of sideways motion to reach its destination, but that's no easy feat. In addition to using a powerful rocket, the Delta IV Heavy, Parker Solar Probe will perform seven Venus gravity assists over its seven-year mission to shed sideways speed into Venus' well of orbital energy. These gravity assists will draw Parker Solar Probe's orbit closer to the Sun for a record approach of just 3.83 million miles from the Sun's visible surface on the final orbits. Though it's shedding sideways speed to get closer to the Sun, Parker Solar Probe will pick up overall speed, bolstered by Sun's extreme gravity - so it will also break the record for the fastest-ever human-made objects, clocking in at 430,000 miles per hour on its final orbits. Why NASA's Parker Solar Probe Swings By Venus


Designed, built, and operated by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, is flying closer to the sun than any other spacecraft before. It will pass by the sun 24 times, solving age-old mysteries surrounding the origins of the solar wind and other activity that affects life on Earth. What makes this mission possible is a unique trajectory with flights past Venus, which shape the probe’s orbit and set its course toward the sun. Without them, there is no mission, and there are no great discoveries.   So why is Venus so important to a mission to the Sun? It all comes down to power.   The truth is, no rocket could supply the amount of power required to get Parker Solar Probe as close to the sun as it needs to be. So, we need to borrow force from Venus. It sounds like science fiction, but in reality, spacecraft can leverage the gravity of other planets to speed up, like a slingshot, or to slow down, like tapping the brakes.   This is called a gravity assist maneuver, or a gravity assist.
