LOVE ROCK N’ ROLL TRUE STORIES? NEVER MISS A BEAT FACEBOOK: 🤍RNRTrueStories TWITTER: 🤍rocktruestories BLOG: 🤍rockandrolltruestories.com #toto #jeffporcaro #rosanna Jeff Porcaro, Toto’s drummer would die unexpectedly. His death wasn’t just a tragedy, but the circumstances around it were suspicious. Let’s explore the story of the his life and death. Initial news report stated that on August 5, 1992 Porcaro, 38 died while doing yard work at his home in Hidden Hills California. He was spraying two bottles of pesticide in his bug ridden yard and shortly afterwards he was laying on the couch complaining to his wife he couldn’t move some of his limbs. An ambulence arrived taking the drummer to the hospital where he died shortly aftewards. The New York Times published a piece on August 7th, 1992 citing a Los Angeles coroner spokesperson claiming that Porcaro died of a heart attack was due to an allergic reaction to inhaling pesticide spray. Porcaro left behind a wife and three young boys as well his band Toto, who he co-founded with keyboardist and vocalist David Paich (paych) two decades prior. His band was now left with the difficult task of mourning and finding a replacement drummer. It took the band years to recover from the devastating news. Following his passing Paich and guitarist Steve Lukather initially agreed to disband the group feeling they could no longer move on without their leader. Lukather would tell Team Rock in 2016“Jeff was our figurehead,” “We were torn apart.” It would be Porcaro’s family who urged the band to carry on and that they did. The band soon enlisted Los Angeles based drummer Simon Phillips to replace Jeff Porcaro as they knew that Porcaro was a fan of Phillips Lukather worked with Phillips on a previous tour with Santana and Jeff Beck in Japan in 1986. Jeff Porcaro had a pretty storied career becoming a professional musician at age 17 dropping out of high school to tour with sonny and cher. Following his stint with the duo he played with a wide range of artists including steely dan, boz scaggs, pink floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Fogerty to name a few. His collaborations with some of the biggest names in rock happened while he was behind the kit for Toto. Porcaro was one of the most recorded drummers in history, working on hundreds of albums and thousands of sessions. Paich would reveal that himself and Jeff began as "the co-leaders of Toto," a band that also included Jeff’s brother keyboardist Steve Porcaro and – bassist Mike Porcaro, as well. The trio were the hcildren of famous jazz drummer Joe Porcaro, so it was no surprise they are artistic. The group’s breakthrough album happened with 1982’s Toto IV which featured two of the most popular rock n’ roll songs of all time including Rosanna and Africa. Rosanna is often highlighted as one of Jeff’s breakthrough performances being heavily influenced by the Led Zeppelin song “fool in the rain”. It was no surprise why he became one of the most sought after studio musicians around this time. Paych told Modern Drummer in 1992 "He wasn’t just a drummer; he was an all-around musician,". "I’ve played with a whole lot of drummers, and he’s the best I’ve ever played with. We never had to talk much. Everything was just understood. Our communication was non-verbal. It was mainly just eye contact between him and me. He was the brother I never had.” Lukather would echo those sentiments tell Smashing interviews in 2015"He was like the brother I never had." Weeks after the official news came out of Porcaro’s death the Los Angeles coroner released their official report.. The cause of death had been changed. The coroner revealed that small trace amounts of cocaine were found in the drummer’s body and his cause of death was changed to a hardening of the arteries due to prolonged drug use. An autopsy that was done claimed tha
Toto - Live at Montreux 1991 Live at the Montreux Casino, Switzerland July 5th 1991. By the time Toto was invited to play the famed Montreux Jazz Festival in 1991, their success had already been assured. Having established themselves in the ‘70s as an elite band of session players-turned-chart toppers, they were in the midst of a European tour when the call came. It was an appropriate fit. Not only were they able to spotlight their two most prominent hits of the time “Africa” and “Rosanna” but they were also allowed to express a more progressive posture that would come with their next album, 1992’s Kingdom of Desire. In short, the band were in peak prowess. Sadly, this marked one of their final appearances with drummer Jeff Porcaro, who passed away the following year. But as Live at Montreux 1991 demonstrates, the core band - Pocaro, his brother Mike on bass and mainstays, singer/guitarist Steve Lukather and keyboard player keyboardist/vocalist David Paich were in prime form. The late, great Jeff Porcaro recording Eleanor Rigby in 1989. I have overdubbed the final Steve Lukather recording onto the video. It isn't the actual drum take unfortunately but I thought that it would give us an idea of what Jeff was hearing and give us an insight into the man's phenomenal groove! Luckily a lot of the main groove sections line up and it's amazing to watch. I hope this is ok to post and that you enjoy it.

🤍 Try this one after listening to Lars. Not in the pocket I know! Some intentional, some I just did not even practice. But....Here we get a glimpse of what Africa may have sounded like if Baby Dodds or John Bonham or Tony Williams or Vinnie, or Lars or Buddy Rich and others had played on this great track. Be happy people, it's all in good fun! I get NO compensation for this due to using the TOTO track. That's fine. Never thought this would go so crazy, but almost 100k now. Wish I would have taken more time. O.K. now for the tough part. Explaining humor, kind of kills the joke. But here goes. Some folks are taking life WAY too seriously. This was done SO quickly and off the cuff. I got the idea and just kept going. I could barely hear the track - no excuse I know. Was not in the pocket for sure. That was not the point anyway. I would literally come up with an idea of another one as I played. So, I did another one until I felt it was enough. Just kept hitting pause and then did a new one. Mostly this has gotten a lot of great comments. A few haters. A few that COVID has ruined their ability to laugh at something only intended for fun. Really, I am just wanting to bring some distraction to the difficulties we are all facing. Honestly, not one of these drummers is a bad drummer. All are to be highly regarded including Lars. I did not even pick the thumbnail! YT did that automatically. I went with it. This was wham bam and done. Redo or not? That is the question. I can't redo spontaneity. It may work. It may not. Glad it made MOST people laugh. I may redo it. Vote below in the comments. Drums: 1966 Ludwig with a LM402 snare drum - 1970s aluminum. 10" tom add on. Keller shell. 14" floor tom is a Gretsch. He enjoyed analyzing a part that someone played, and what it did for the song. That's why I always loved turning him onto stuff that I would hear that would knock me out. Later, when I came to the realization that we drummers play who we are inside, not just what our credentials say about us, I realized what a tremendous blessing it was to have a young Jeff Porcaro enter my life and become every bit the inspiration to me, as he always said I was to him. His gifts as a player have been obviously very well documented, and so as you study and appreciate the beauty in his playing, know that is exactly what he was like as a person." - Jim Keltner⠀ - Stay in touch with Drum Channel! 📕 Facebook – 🤍 📸 Instagram – 🤍 🐦 Twitter – 🤍 Get better faster with our Practice Assist Metronome™! 🤍 Visit the Drum Channel Store! 🤍

In this episode, John remembers the great Jeff Porcaro whom we lost August 5, 1992. Joining John is a legendary group of Jeff’s friends and contemporaries and a literal “who’s who” of the drumming community, including Jim Keltner, Vinnie Colaiuta, John Robinson, Rick Marotta, Stan Lynch, Gregg Bissonette, Gary Mallaber, Jody Cortez, David Garfield, John Good, Rich Mangicaro, Robyn Flans, Harry McCarthy, Ross Garfield and Paul Jamieson. They discussed Jeff’s incomparable body of work, his incredible time and feel, and the deep love and respect he had from everyone. John also read messages from Jeff’s brother, Steve Porcaro, “Toto" keyboardist and co-founder, David Paich, and legendary session bassist, Bob Glaub. So I did John Bonham sitting in for Jeff Porcaro, and this is Jeff Porcaro sitting in for John Bonham. Rosanna isolated drum track and drumless Whole Lotta Love mash up. Porcaro played with click, and Zeppelin didn't. So I've done some manipulating to get it to fit best as I could, plus I've taken some liberties with the arrangement. :) Cheers, Lee.
