The United States has shot down the suspected Chinese spy balloon that's been traveling across the US over the last few days. Authorities temporarily closed the air space over the Carolina coast line, as the balloon aproached the Atlantic Ocean, where a fighter jet finally brought its journey to an end. Beijing claims the balloon was a civilian research air-ship that strayed into US airspace. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who broke off plans to visit China earlier this week, called the incident a "clear violation" of US sovereignty. China has condemned the U.S. military’s decision to shoot down a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that flew over the U.S. The United States shot down the balloon on Saturday - creating a diplomatic and political storm. The US and China exchanged words about a suspected Chinese spy balloon as military officials revealed other incursions. US officials said the downed craft was massive in size. The quarrel between Washington and Beijing over the incursion of a Chinese balloon into United States airspace continued on Tuesday. The suspected surveillance balloon was shot down off the South Carolina coast on Saturday after a days-long journey across the US mainland. When asked on Tuesday whether Beijing had asked the US to return debris from the balloon, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said it belonged to China. The US Coast Guard has imposed a temporary security zone in waters off South Carolina during the military's search for debris from the balloon. US President Joe Biden said the plan was always to shoot it down, but Republicans are criticizing the time the president took to respond. Blinken's abrupt decision to delay the trip came just hours before he had been due to depart Washington for Beijing. A US official said Blinken and President Joe Biden determined it was best not to proceed with the trip at this time. The balloon has been flying over US skies for a few days now. President Xi Jinping wants to establish the People's Republic of China as the leading world power of tomorrow. Never before has China been so successful and pursued such ambitious goals. And never before has China so upset the global political balance. The person largely responsible for China‘s dramatic shift is the President of the People's Republic, Xi Jinping. As the key figure in Chinese politics, he has steered the communist country with sober pragmatism and calculation since 2013. In terms of domestic policy, Xi strives for the "perfect dictatorship." When it comes to foreign policy, he wants to rewrite the international rules. What are the goals of this mysterious autocrat, who was deeply influenced by Maoism in his youth? What motivates him? This documentary traces the rise of the Chinese president, and tries to answer the question of what his political plans for the future might look like. The Chinese president’s friendly demeanor should not obscure the fact that Xi Jinping is willing to do anything to fulfill the mission of his Communist Party: To make China the leading economic and military power by 2049, the 100th birthday of the People's Republic. In 2017, following extensive political purges, Beijing paved the way for Xi Jinping to be "president for life". His rallying cry is the "Chinese Dream," an ideology with nationalist overtones. Those who don't toe the line end up in prison and must publicly apologize. What’s more, a new electronic monitoring system is being implemented - to distinguish between good and bad citizens. On the international stage, Xi Jinping is trying to establish a new social order that is worrying for Western democracies. This documentary on President Xi Jinping is the first of its kind. A People's Liberation Army officer close to the halls of power, a Beijing historian, several regime critics, a former US ambassador to China and several biographers attempt to decipher Xi Jinping‘s uncompromising strategy. #documentary #dwdocumentary DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The Pentagon is tracking a suspected spy balloon as it flies over the western United States, officials said Thursday. The Pentagon says it suspects it is Chinese, but has not confirmed its origin. The balloon has been flying over US skies for a few days now. A US defense official said the balloon — spotted over Montana — has a flight path that would carry it over several sensitive sites but did not provide specific details. Montana is home to one of three US nuclear missile silo fields at Malmstrom Air Force Base. China has warned against speculation and what it calls "hype" until the facts are established. Germany says China is operating two illegal 'police stations' on its territory. These set-ups don't have a fixed office, and are run by private individuals from the Chinese diaspora. The aim is to collect information on Chinese dissidents and citizens in exile and pass that on to Beijing. Its a pattern that's come to light across the world. An earlier report by Madrid based NGO Safeguard Defenders claimed there were more than a hundred such 'police stations' in at least 53 countries. Most exist illegally and aim to monitor, coerce and in some instances repatriate, those Beijing considers criminal or anti-China. China's New Silk Road in Europe | DW Documentary

Duisburg is home to Europe's biggest inland port, and in 2014 was subject to a high-profile visit by Xi Jinping. Since then the German inland port city has most definitely been on the map in China - as the destination for an increasing number of freight trains from the country. Duisburg is, together with the likes of Liège or Genoa, one of the revived Silk Road's gateways to Europe. The project is set to be completed in 2049, with the aim of consolidating China's status as a global economic and political player. The most immediate manifestation of Beijing's ambitions in Europe is the huge investment in logistics and infrastructure. The "Belt and Road" initiative incorporates a network of railway lines, airports and shipping routes - most of them either run or controlled by China. Supporters in Europe point to the economic growth potential, while critics warn of growing dependence on China. The Silk Road project had been powering ahead in recent years - until a succession of pandemic-related lockdowns in China disrupted its international trade routes and supply chains. Both Beijing's plans and those of its partners are being compromised by COVID-19 coupled with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The gigantic investments in ports, container terminals, railways and logistics hubs for land, sea and air links constitute both a challenge and a hugely promising opportunity. This documentary focuses on three key locations at the European end of the "21st century Silk Road": the inland port of Duisburg, Liège with one of the continent's biggest cargo airports and the new Alibaba logistics hub, and major Italian seaport Genoa. The film reveals the degree to which they are already integrated into the Chinese trade network, and examines the prospects of the "21st century Silk Road" in light of China's zero-COVID strategy and its partnership with Russia. More than 60 percent of China's population of 1.4 billion currently lives in cities. Within a decade, the share of urban dwellers is expected to increase to 75 percent. Construction is booming and competition for residential land is fierce. But the right to live in a city in China is conditional. Authorities want their modern cities to be peopled with well-educated, highly-qualified or politically well-connected residents. As a result, certain standards have to be met to be eligible for a modern, urban home. Only members of China's political classes and the financially successful have a hope of qualifying. Yet more than half of the people who live in cities are so-called "migrant workers." They come from rural communities and have no official rights to settle in cities. They are there to work. With no proper rights, they are merely tolerated while they serve as merchants, servants, waitstaff, cleaners, construction workers and tradespeople. But while they are indispensable to daily life in the cities, they are unable to afford their exorbitant rents. This documentary looks at how and where these workers live, and asks whether middle and working class Chinese even figure in the official vision of shiny, high-tech cities. The filmmakers also look at what happens to those who oppose official plans, or stand in the way of the building boom. #documentary #China #cities ـــــ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. China - Surveillance state or way of the future? | DW Documentary

China is building a huge digital surveillance system. The state collects massive amounts of data from willing citizens: the benefits are practical, and people who play by the rules are rewarded. Critics call it "the most ambitious Orwellian project in human history." China's digital surveillance system involves massive amounts of data being gathered by the state. In the so-called "brain" of Shanghai, for example, authorities have an eye on everything. On huge screens, they can switch to any of the approximately one million cameras, to find out who’s falling asleep behind the wheel, or littering, or not following Coronavirus regulations. "We want people to feel good here, to feel that the city is very safe," says Sheng Dandan, who helped design the "brain." Surveys suggest that most Chinese citizens are inclined to see benefits as opposed to risks: if algorithms can identify every citizen by their face, speech and even the way they walk, those breaking the law or behaving badly will have no chance. It’s incredibly convenient: a smartphone can be used to accomplish just about any task, and playing by the rules leads to online discounts thanks to a social rating system. That's what makes Big Data so attractive, and not just in China. But where does the required data come from? Who owns it, and who is allowed to use it? The choice facing the Western world is whether to engage with such technology at the expense of social values, or ignore it, allowing others around the world to set the rules. #documentary #freedocumentary #China DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines.

Less technology for China, fewer chips for Beijing: Netherlands and Japan join hands with the US in implementing some controls on their exports to China. The agreement, reported by Associated Press, would see advanced chip makers like Dutch ASML and Japanese Nikon limit their exports. The agreement follows the US's decision in October last year to impose strict controls on the sale of semiconductors and the machines used to make them to China. Taiwan conflict - Facing the threat from China | DW Documentary

Taiwan is a democracy with a strong human rights record and a high standard of living. But despite the country’s economic strength and elected government, the island state struggles to receive international recognition. Even in terms of corruption, Taiwan’s track record is better than that of some European states. The problem is that Beijing regards democratic Taiwan, which seceded from the mainland in 1949, as a renegade province rather than an independent state. China is trying to isolate it internationally. Many fear that China has plans to attack Taiwan in the near future: The President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, has made it clear that his country is prepared to claim the island by military means. Beijing has been adopting this threatening stance for decades. Thus far, the goal has been to annex the island to the mainland at some undefined point in the future. China's historically questionable worldview would see this as reunification; from Taiwan's perspective, it would be annexation. Both countries are highly armed - a war would inevitably cost many people their lives. The film throws open a window on a nation that has been in a state of existential threat for decades; a country that is home to people who will defend their freedom at all costs - and also those who yearn for an imminent annexation with China. #documentary #dwdocumentary #taiwan #china DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. China's economic growth is set to fall behind the rest of Asia for the first time since 1990, according to the World Bank. It expects the Chinese economy to grow 2.8 percent this year - nearly half of what was previously forecast. The slowdown is largely due to a downturn of the property market and Beijing's Zero-Covid policy. The World Bank cut its forecast for the Asia Pacific Region as a whole to 3.2 percent. What are the prospects for the Chinese economy now? The village of Tombo has lived from fishing for centuries. But now that way of life is under threat. Chinese trawlers are overfishing coastal areas with their modern fishing methods, leaving stocks depleted. The village of Tombo in Sierra Leone has flourished since the pre-colonial era. Its population lives from fishing and wants this natural resource to feed future generations. But prosperity levels have been declining in recent years, due to the influx of Chinese trawlers overfishing the coastline - often with the clandestine backing of corrupt officials. The men of the village are often forced to give up fishing in Tombo and seek employment in other countries. Their wives and daughters, most of whom earn a living sorting the catch and selling it at the market, are also finding themselves without work. The situation has been further exacerbated by natural catastrophes and the coronavirus lockdown. Despite the adversity, the people of Tombo are trying to keep their families and community together. Their individual battles reflect the ecological and economic problems facing West Africa. Fatmata has been a single mother since her husband left the village. He now has two new wives abroad and doesn’t send home any money for their son. Suliaman is a born-and-bred fisherman. But when his father blames him for the increasingly meagre catch, he decides to seek his fortune outside Sierra Leone. As spokesperson for the fishing association, Wudie attempts to unite the village community in the face of mounting challenges. #documentary #dwdocumentary #fishing DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said while he is not interested in supplying ammunition to Ukraine, he has a mediation proposal involving China. "Brazil is a country of peace. And that is why Brazil does not want any participation in this war, not even indirectly," Lula said during a joint press briefing with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is on a four-day visit to the region. Lula said his country would work with others to help reach peace in Ukraine, and pointed out China's role in peace talks. "Our Chinese friends play a very important role in this," the left-wing politician said. "It's time for China to step up," Lula emphasized, adding that Brazil, China and Russia form part of the BRICS emerging economies which also include India and South Africa, however Brazil was among the 141 countries at the UN General Assembly last year who voted to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine. #Ukraine #Brazil #lula Subscribe: 🤍 For more news go to: 🤍 Follow DW on social media: ►Facebook: 🤍 ►Twitter: 🤍 ►Instagram: 🤍 ►Twitch: 🤍 Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: 🤍

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz attracted much criticism, including from his own coalition partners, for visiting Beijing last week to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the first European leader to do so since before the pandemic. But Germany's government put a stop to two Chinese buyouts of companies in the semiconductor or computer chip industry this week, saying that they risked a loss of know-how in a critical sector where Beijing is rapidly expanding its influence. This follows the partial purchase of a terminal at the Port of Hamburg — Germany's largest — by Chinese company Cosco. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock wants to make cooperation with China dependent on the human rights situation there, Der Spiegel magazine reported on Wednesday, citing a draft of a new government China strategy.
