The Sad Truth of My DIY Garden Pond

Three years ago I Built one of my favorite projects to date, the DIY Backyard Garden Pond. It was a real challenge to pull off and something that I'm truly proud of, even to this day. Sure it might not be the best looking thing around, but that's alright. It still does everything it's designed to do and it's been so enjoyable to have. However, the time for it had come and the sad truth of this pond, which I've known for awhile now, must be revealed. More on what's happening in the future... stay tuned. Ultimate DIY garden edging that will last forever

In this video, I demonstrate how to build a block wall that acts as garden bed edging using basic tools and readily available materials. This process will work for any concrete blocks and some stone block walls. If you're looking for garden edging ideas, you definitely want to check this out. The blocks I'm using in this video are the Rumblestone series by Pavestone. These are available at most big box home improvement stores. Materials and Tools needed for the job (affiliate links) Line Level: 🤍 Shovel: 🤍 Hand Tamper: 🤍 Construction adhesive: 🤍 Complete list of tools and materials: 🤍 Building a stone or block wall around your garden is a great way to add curb appeal to your home, divide your landscape, and create effective borders or edging. However, most homeowners make mistakes when using blocks for garden bed edging. In this video, I walk you step-by-step through this process so you can build a garden retaining wall that looks great and lasts a lifetime without warping or tipping over. The process I demonstrate is best used for concrete landscaping blocks but can also be used for brick as well. You can use this process to build a retaining wall-raised garden bed or just for garden bed edging even when not retaining soil. You can build this wall up to three feet tall. First, you start off with a four-inch layer of packed gravel for a base. Make sure that it is perfectly level because that is the foundation of your garden wall. Then, begin laying the blocks on the first row and leveling each as you go. This is a time-consuming process, but it's important so slow. Once the first layer of concrete stone blocks is installed, the rest of the project is easy. Add the second layer, making sure to stagger the seams. Once you have the second layer fit, remove it and apply construction adhesive to secure the blocks together. Then, repeat this process for as high as you want. Installing a level string tied between two stakes is a great way to help you dig to the appropriate depth, maintain a straight wall, and guide other aspects of the project. To cut the stone, use a hammer and a mason chisel, as I demonstrate in the video. Related Videos- For more DIY landscaping ideas... Concrete Sphere Tutorial | GARDEN | DECOR | DIY

These Enchanting Garden Spheres (or ORBS) add a bit of intrigue and magical texture to any garden space whether it's a modern garden or fairytale garden. I've always loved architectural remnants and found objects. I was researching how to create these and found many inspiring videos, but none had a full step-by-step tutorial. DIY Garden Room Build with No Experience! Part 1 - Preparation and Base

I decided that my garden needs a garden room for use as a summerhouse, man-cave, maybe a games room. After a lot of research, I decided the pre-fabricated summerhouses just weren't going to cut it, and I didn't want to spend the serious money to have a company build one for me. Instead, I watched a few videos on Youtube, scoured the internet for ideas, then broke out the tools. Fortunately, my dad is on hand to help keep things right with his eye for detail, and his commitment to doing a job properly! My aim is to have it ready for BBQ season 2020! How to make great compost | DIY Garden Projects | Gardening Australia

00:42 Get composting with Costa! It doesn't have to be expensive, it doesn't have to be complicated... and you can do it anywhere! Compost is great for your plants and the environment. When food scraps break down in landfill, they produce large amounts of methane (much more potent that carbon dioxide). Composting prevents most of the process... and creates nutrient rich material for your garden. 00:42 HOW TO COMPOST: Choose a shady spot and position so the bottom of the bin is in direct contact with the soil. Prevent pests by either sitting the bin on wire aviary mesh or bury the base 10cm deep into the soil. 1:03 Add a layer of coarse, dry material, like sticks, to encourage air circulation. Add a layer of green material, then a layer of brown material. General rule of thumb - add two parts brown material to one part green material. Brown material is moistened cardboard, egg containers, shredded paper (not glossy paper), straw, hay, sugarcane mulch, dry leaves etc. 1:25 Green material is garden clippings, grass clippings, vegie scraps, green leaves etc Continue until bin is full. After between 2 - 6 months, the compost will be ready to go! AVOID - meat, wheat and dairy as these are more likely to attract vermin. MYTH - you can't compost onions, citrus and tea leaves. You can! 2:27 HOW TO CREATE COMPOST QUICKER Once a week Aerate the pile with a compost crank or garden fork. The ABC cannot recommend or endorse commercial products or businesses - however, you can find your own compost aerator at a good garden centre or nursery, at some farmers' markets, or you can search online for "australia buy compost aerator" from a variety of suppliers. 2:40 Every second week Add a handful of poultry manure or blood and bone, sprinkled onto a dry layer to provide a boost of nitrogen. A little rock dust will get the worms working & provide some micronutrients. Rock minerals are available as a fine dust or in pellets. They're sold through nurseries, agricultural suppliers and online. Just look for 'rock dust,' 'rock minerals' or 'natural mineral fertilisers.' 2:53 Once a month Add a handful of lime. This combats the acidity created by the decomposing scraps and the worms love it. YOU CAN SUPPORT MY WORK WITH A DONATION: PAYPAL: 🤍 Hello and welcome, I’m Carl the landscape guy and today I’m building a natural looking garden stream for a customer and I will show you every step in detail. I am really looking forward to this project and I think that it is very possible to replicate it with the help of this video. Thank you to all my viewers for the many likes, comments and subscriptions lately, that helps a lot and enables me to produce new videos for you. Today we are in a fairly small yard and therefore I have planned a 3 meter long stream. The size of the stream can be easily changed depending on how much space you have for the construction. First I cut a square that’s about 70 by 70 centimeters and then remove the turf. Then I dig the square out to about 70 centimeters deep. I am reusing the soil to make a small hill for our stream, because we’ll need a slope for proper water flow. It is important to well-compact the soil layer by layer from the beginning by treading on it, so the stream won’t sag later. By the way, you can find my tools and equipment in the description section, so please use the links to order what you need. I'm creating a slight slope around the edges here now. I form the hill a little elongated, which will fit the stream better. Now the ground is getting sandier, but that's good because sand can be compacted better. Right away I remove things like garbage, stones or even broken glass like this here; because we do not want to risk damaging the pond liner later on. Now I add a few wheelbarrows of soil, which is available to me on this construction site. This makes our hill a bit larger, but it is not entirely necessary. Maybe you have some soil or sand lying around that you can use. Or you might already have a natural slope in the garden, where the stream can be built in nicely. You can see here that I have already decreased the slope going towards the hole. And I use this tamper to compact the soil one more time. Now you’ve probably already asked yourself, what goes into the hole. And I’m going to get that ready right now. It is a percolation cube or also called a aqua block, which needs to be assembled. But assembling it is very fast and easy with these little pins. One side will remain open for now and you’ll find out why a little later. The percolation cube should be installed level, so I use a spirit level to pull the soil flat. The cube size is 60 by 60 by 60 centimeters and the hole is about 70 centimeters deep, so that the cube will sit a little lower in the hole. This way the water will run in better and it is easier to cover with rocks later. Next I lay out a thick protective fabric, that weighs 300 grams per square meter. After that comes the pond liner. Both the fabric and the liner are 2 meters wide by 5 meters long. And it just fits with the 60 centimeter cube. I also wrapped the cube in fabric, so it can't damage the liner. Now we move on to the streambed. I form the lowest dam with the help of a garden curbstone. I use only a little concrete just so that it does not tip over. I set the top of the stone at about 15 cm above the upper edge of the cube. Now the rest of the streambed will be formed. I set the second dam with old paving stones. Here, only a little concrete is needed, so that they don’t topple over. #waterfeature #stream #garden

DIY Backyard Garden Pond

The pond build is finally here! I've been talking about this for months and thought that it would have been done about a month ago, but the whole thing is just so time consuming, especially with the weather we've been having. Like I said in the video, this has been going on since October of 2018 and was just a concept long before that. The whole reason that I even built this is for my goldfish, so stocking in non-negotiable... other than more goldfish lol (4 won't be enough). This is only the first part of a few video series and I hope it gives you a good idea as to what's possible outside the realm of naturalistic ponds. Obviously that's what we all want, but sometimes it's just not feasible because of cost. Even though it's not the same type of thing, these kind of ponds can still be beautiful in their own sort of way. Plus you can create a good home for your beloved fish, which is often what it's all about. There's so much more I could say, but the video should be able to do most of the talking. If you have any specific questions or want to see something else in the next installment, please let me know down in the comments. This one took forever, so I really hope you enjoy it. Also a huge thanks for Oase for supplying the pumps! It was a huge burden off of me and was really appreciated. I'm using the Waterfall Pump 1650 for the skimmer and will be using AquaMax Eco Premium 3000 for the rest. I'll talk more about those in the next video and put some links below. 🤍 If you have any comments, suggestions or questions, leave them down in the comments! DIY Hydroponics Garden Tower Build | Less than $150

Working and spending more time at home has recently gotten me more interested in gardening and growing my own vegetables. It has also been a pretty expensive past-time given the amount of materials, soil, and water needed to upkeep and grow a garden. I looked into cheaper alternatives and started learning more about hydroponics, however, that in itself is also pretty expensive to start. I figured I could build my own hydroponics system on my own for much cheaper. This is part one of a short series where I start my very first attempt at a hydroponics garden build. DIY Mini 3 World Zen Garden Terrarium

I've been thinking lately that I wanted to make a new terrarium. So, I took a look through my containers and found the one I used in this video. As soon as I saw it, this idea came to me. I thought, how cool would it be to include a sand zen garden on the bottom? As I started working through it, I really embraced the rustic artisan vibe. Overall I'm really pleased with how it turned out. From the handmade tools to the terrarium and even the stain choice, I think it shaped up to be a really unique piece. What do you think? How to make your own solar food dehydrator | DIY Garden Projects | Gardening Australia

Costa is upcycling some found materials into making a DIY solar dehydrator. Dehydrating fruit and veg is a great way of preserving excess. Subscribe 🔔 🤍 What you need: An old table Hardwood timber planks for edging Timber and metal saws Clamp to secure timber Galvanised corrugated iron base Dark paint, if needed Galvanised screws Screwdriver Drill with large bits for drilling aeration holes Flyscreen offcuts. Stapler or glue to hold flyscreen in place. Smaller, thinner timber offcuts to support drying racks inside the frame Flyscreens or similar to act as drying racks Glass cover Wheels on an axel for one pair of table legs. Angle grinder What you do: - Costa uses the old table as his base. - He has found some planks of 4x2 timber to form a box frame on top, which will act as the edging. Because some pieces are not straight, he clamps them into place to keep them straighter. - Screw the frame timbers together at the corners. - To ensure good airflow inside, Costa lines the base with two pieces of galvanised corrugated iron, cut to size. The pieces he has found are dark coloured so will heat up well in the sun; lighter-coloured pieces can be painted black. - These are simply laid in place, not fixed, so they can be taken out for cleaning. - Drill ventilation holes into the side of the frame to maintain good airflow in the frame. - Line the top of the wood where the holes are with fly screen to keep hungry insects out. Costa staples his in place with an upholstery stapler, but you could use suitable glue. - To sit the drying food on, Costa has used old fly screens that he’s cut to size, replacing the old netting with new, clean netting. - These sit just inside the frame, so he props them up on two pieces of offcut architrave placed at either side of the frame. Any thin timber with a wide about half the height of the frame would do. - He has found an old window to cover the whole box. It’s quite heavy, so he’s fixing it in place with heavy-duty hinges, which have to be carefully attached to the window frame to avoid damaging the glass. - So the table can be moved around, he attaches wheels to one set of legs. - Finally, he uses the angle grinder to cut down the other set of legs so the table can be positioned to face the sun, catching the sun’s rays at a better angle. Using the frame: - Place thin slices of fruit on the netting, cover and leave in the sun until the fruit is flexible but leathery. It can be stored in glass jars and stored in a cool, dry place. _ Gardening Australia is an ABC TV program providing gardening know-how and inspiration.
