(HD Video 986x720) The famous Band Wagon number you've all, no doubt, seen countless times ... here it is again in HD.
Just a few among many of Cyd Charisse's best movie dances, in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, THE BAND WAGON, DEEP IN MY HEART, BRIGADOON, IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER, and SILK STOCKINGS, featuring Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, and James Mitchell, in films directed by Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly, Rouben Mamoulian, and Vincente Minnelli. Choreography by Gene Kelly, Michael Kidd, Eugene Loring, and Hermes Pan. This montage was first shown, along with costume sketches (by Mary Ann Nyberg, Walter Plunkett, Helen Rose, and Irene Sharaff) of the above-mentioned musical numbers, in the exhibition I curated in Paris in 2018: COMÉDIES MUSICALES, LA JOIE DE VIVRE DU CINÉMA (MOVIE MUSICALS, A GLORIOUS FEELING) at the Philharmonie de Paris.
(HD Video 1920x1080) I finally decided to upgrade my Warner Archive DVD to the Warner Archive Blu-ray and it's delicious. Just see for yourself (though YouTube uploads still leave something to be desired, this is much better than my 480p upload)! Enjoy!
As a dance team they're all things; gorgeous, unbeatable and incredibly talented! As far as Ricardo is concerned, may he rest in peace! En Paz Descanse, and be with your beloved wife Georgiana. Dearest Cyd, you'll never be forgotten! There's an entire planet that misses you! There's little ever on film that could compare to the two of you! Thank you both!

Cyd Charisse was an American actress and dancer. After recovering from polio as a child and studying ballet, Charisse entered films in the 1940s. Her roles usually featured her abilities as a dancer, and she was paired with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly; her films include Singin' in the Rain , The Band Wagon , Brigadoon with Gene Kelly and Van Johnson and Silk Stockings . She stopped dancing in films in the late 1950s, but continued acting in film and television, and in 1991 made her Broadway debut. In her later years, she discussed the history of the Hollywood musical in documentaries, and was featured in That's Entertainment! III in 1994. She was awarded the National Medal of the Arts and Humanities in 2006. Early life Cyd Charisse was born Tula Ellice Finklea in Amarillo, Texas, the daughter of Lela and Ernest Enos Finklea, Sr., who was a jeweler. Her nickname "Sid" was taken from her older brother Ernest E. Finklea jr., who tried to say "Sis". It was later given the spelling of "Cyd" by Arthur Freed.
I vividly remember this strip tease from the opening credits of The Silencers, Dean Martin's goofy spy movie. I got this clip from a trailer for the movie. The actual movie no longer has the full strip. The zipper stops about stocking-top height before rump is revealed. The "relax" song continues over a cut to signage for the spy organization ICE. My reaction to this part while watching an Amazon rental - "Hey! WTF!" Don't mutilate my tawdry movie memories Hollywood.

Rare/Raw Marilyn outtake footage with original audio from the unfinished movie "Something's got To Give in 1962. Marilyn trying a swedish accent. Most not seen in documentaries etc.
Steve Allen returns to the panel this week to fill in for Fred Allen, who died suddenly of a heart attack the day before. John Daly makes a touching announcement at the beginning of the program to explain, then the program proceeds as usual until the closing, when each of the panelists offers a brief but heartfelt tribute to Fred (Steve Allen's tribute in particular has been quoted many times). Class all around. Still makes me sad every time I watch it. The last segment features Japanese jazz pianist composer/arranger and bandleader, Toshiko Akiyoshi (though not as a mystery guest Akiyoshi wasn't well known enough at this time for the panel to be blindfolded). MYSTERY GUEST: Cyd Charisse [actress in musicals, dancer] PANEL: Arlene Francis, Steve Allen, Dorothy Kilgallen, Bennett Cerf

From Bandwagon. For once we see Cyd as a classical ballet dancer, very different from her style in most of her films. When Diaghilev's Ballet Russes toured the United States, Cyd was one of the cast.

(Video 720x480) Cyd opposite Kenny Baker (vocals)
I've always wondered what Cyd Charisse's singing voice sounded like. I assumed it was bad, since it was never heard in any of the many musicals she made. India Adams, Eileen Wilson, Marion Doenges, Vicki Carr, and in this film, Carole Richards, all dubbed her in different pictures. So I was surprised to finally hear her sing, and she's not that bad, right? .
"Dancing in the Dark" by Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse from the 1953 film "The Bandwagon" is indisputably one of the top five or 10 performances of all time in a musical film...it is the very definition of poetry in motion. Captured for the film history series "Movie Music Romance" produced by John LeGear and presented primarily at community colleges and public libraries in and around Chicago.
You may not know her face, but you definitely know her legs. All month long, we're celebrating the resilient and talented Cyd Charisse and her fantastic Hollywood career every Tuesday. "Dancing In The Dark" - Saturday Night Live 1978 - The Band Wagon 1953 - Director Vincente Minnelli - Gilda Radner - Steve Martin - Fred Astaire - Cyd Charisse. This is a dated SNL skit about two geeks in a dive, both fantasizing about an elegant romance, but doing it poorly. The humor of the skit depends on two things: the audience's response, and the viewer knowing whom Radner and Martin are spoofing. If you mute the audience response in the left audio channel, Radner’s and Martin’s gestures just look ridiculous. Or if you don’t know whom they’re spoofing, the act also loses a great bulk of its humor. The Astaire-Charisse version of the dance was added, split-screen, so today’s viewer gets the parody, as the 1953 version of the dance is no longer commonly viewed or marketed. SNL used the album-release track from the Astaire-Charisse version for this skit, so it was easy to replace the SNL soundtrack with a modern, stereo, edition of the song. ...
