The Circus Maximus was the greatest circus,  venue for chariot races and venationes (hunts), ever constructed by the Romans.  In particular the ludi Romani were held here annually and the occasional triumphal processions, snaking their way around the Palatine hill. Located between the Palatine and Aventine hills,  its maximum structure, under Trajan, had a seating capacity of 250,000 spectators, around the 540m long track, with a width of 80 m. The remains of the venue are visible on the eastern end: some seating and remains of the Arch of Titus, an archaeological site of the Comune di Roma.  Find out more about the Circus Maximus at 🤍 and 🤍 This content is brought to you by The American Institute for Roman Culture (AIRC), a 501(C)3 US Non-Profit Organization. It’s often thought the gladiator games were Rome’s most popular - and while those certainly were wildly in demand - the ancient Romans favorite sport was the Chariot Races. In this video we will take a look at what the spectacle would have looked like in the largest stadium in the ancient world - and still to this day the largest stadium ever built - the Circus Maximus. Come explore a day at races that were wild, raucous, dangerous, and a gambler’s paradise. A day in which you realize aren’t that much different than our football Saturdays in the fall. ROME: Circo Massimo. The Circus Maximus (Latin for greatest or largest circus, in Italian Circo Massimo) is an ancient Roman chariot racing stadium and mass entertainment venue located in Rome, Italy. Situated in the valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills, it was the first and largest stadium in ancient Rome and its later Empire. It measured 621 m (2,037 ft) in length and 118 m (387 ft) in width and could accommodate over 150,000 spectators.[1] In its fully developed form, it became the model for circuses throughout the Roman Empire. The site is now a public park. From Wikipedia: 🤍

Ben-Hur movie clips: 🤍 BUY THE MOVIE: 🤍 Don't miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS: 🤍 CLIP DESCRIPTION: Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) wins the race while Messala (Stephen Boyd) is left bleeding in the dust. FILM DESCRIPTION: This 1959 version of Lew Wallace's best-selling novel, which had already seen screen versions in 1907 and 1926, went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Adapted by Karl Tunberg and a raft of uncredited writers including Gore Vidal and Maxwell Anderson, the film once more recounts the tale of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), who lives in Judea with his family during the time that Jesus Christ was becoming known for his "radical" teachings. Ben-Hur's childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) is now an ambitious Roman tribune; when Ben-Hur refuses to help Messala round up local dissidents on behalf of the emperor, Messala pounces on the first opportunity to exact revenge on his onetime friend. Tried on a trumped-up charge of attempting to kill the provincial governor (whose head was accidentally hit by a falling tile), Ben-Hur is condemned to the Roman galleys, while his mother (Martha Scott) and sister (Cathy O'Donnell) are imprisoned. But during a sea battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of commander Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins), who, in gratitude, adopts Ben-Hur as his son and gives him full control over his stable of racing horses. Ben-Hur never gives up trying to find his family or exact revenge on Messala. At crucial junctures in his life, he also crosses the path of Jesus, and each time he benefits from it. The highlight of the film's 212 minutes is its now-legendary chariot race, staged largely by stunt expert Yakima Canutt. Ben-Hur's Oscar haul included Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for Heston, and Best Supporting Actor for Welsh actor Hugh Griffith as an Arab sheik. Purchase your DVD today: 🤍 Ironically, both auto racing and Rome's catastrophic fire had their origin in the same spot. Right here just south of Palatine Hill in Rome. At a place only a handful of tourists even know about, let alone take time to visit. This lackluster dirt track littered with debris from a recent event once pulsated with the energy of thousands of Roman spectators hungry for something we moderns know a thing or two about: spectator sports. The ancient Romans looked forward to the weekends, as much as any of us do today. They would take any opportunity they could to get out of their crowded tenements, into the open sun and take in a good sporting event. Granted, entertainment of the gladiatorial genre was a bit unseemly but it was far from the most popular form of entertainment. It appears that the favorite brand of diversion was the bloodless (or nearly bloodless) kind. How do we know that? Well, the Colosseum, which began being built shortly after Nero's death, would become the largest venue for gladiatorial games in the entire Roman Empire and it had a seating capacity of up to 70,000. But there was another facility in ancient Rome that could seat up to 300,000 people. That was this: the Circus Maximus. The circus maximus was an elongated oval that eventually reached a size of 600 meters by 200 meters roughly the area of more than 20 football fields. It was, in essence, a race track where the Romans flocked to watch the most popular sporting event of the time chariot races. Gambling was as big an attraction for some as were the actual races. But passions ran as high for favorite teams and drivers then as they do among NASCAR fans today. A day at the races consisted first of the pompa (it's where we get our words "pomp" and "pompous" from), an elaborate procession of VIPs, teams, horses, chariots, even statues of gods and goddesses. After that, the crowd would settle for a day of races - anywhere between twelve to twenty-four of them, each scheduled for seven laps each. When lots were cast for pole position, the chariots would line up, the white cloth would drop and then "anything goes" for seven "circuits" of the "circus." FUNNY CIRCUS MAXIMUS LINES: YAH! YAH! I'm going to catch you! Apparently it wasn't unlike those scenes from Ben Hur, with the dirty driving, whipping and hitting. FUNNY CIRCUS MAXIMUS LINES: " Take that and that!" "Is that a salad bowl on your head?" "...and that and that!" "Ouch! That hurts! And I just had myself waxed!" "Yaaaahhh!" "East dust!" We know from ancient sources that some teams even resorted to drugging other teams horses and drivers, even casting magic spells on them. FUNNY CIRCUS MAXIMUS LINES: "That's right...ahh...they love me! They love me! Thank you. Thank you very much! And not one hair out of place." The Circus Maximus was wildly popular bringing in literally hundreds of thousands of race fans. But, as is the case with auto racing today, not everyone saw the attraction. An historian named Pliny took in the Circus Maximus, then quite unimpressed wrote this: "The races were on, a type of spectacle which has never had the slightest attraction for me. I can find nothing new or different in them: once seen is enough, so it surprises me all the more that so many thousands of adult men should have such a childish passion for watching galloping horses and drivers standing in chariots, over and over again...."

The largest gathering spot in Ancient Rome for almost 1,000 years was the Circus Maximus. The Emperor sat on the balcony of his palace watching the chariot races, athletic events, or wild beast fightsas below and around him the 300,000 Roman spectators wildly cheered on their team or their choice in the contest. It was here that gradually the spectacle of the Christian Persecution Era of church history played out. Perhaps MORE believers died for Christ in the sands of the Circus Maximus than in any other spot in Ancient Rome. They were faithful in life, and in deathand so should we no matter what comes. The Roman Games "Ludi Romani" were the greatest games in Ancient Rome and for good reason. They were created to honor Jupiter Optimus Maximus, the greatest of the gods. Over time the number of days of festivities were extended to run from September 4- 19. One of the main activities before the games was the procession, from Jupiter's temple on the Capitoline hill, down the Clivus Capitolinus, through the Forum, along the Vicus Tuscus, to arrive in the Circus Maximus. Not only were the magistrates, Roman youth, dancers, musicians, athletes present, but also the gods themselves; the statuary idols were brought along and placed in seating of honor to watch the games in the Circus Maximus unfold.
