The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is an American long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber. The B-52 was designed and built by Boeing, which has continued to provide support and upgrades. It has been operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since the 1950s. The bomber is capable of carrying up to 70,000 pounds (32,000 kg) of weapons,[2] and has a typical combat range of more than 8,800 miles (14,080 km) without aerial refueling. Beginning with the successful contract bid in June 1946, the B-52 design evolved from a straight wing aircraft powered by six turboprop engines to the final prototype YB-52 with eight turbojet engines and swept wings. The B-52 took its maiden flight in April 1952. Built to carry nuclear weapons for Cold War-era deterrence missions, the B-52 Stratofortress replaced the Convair B-36 Peacemaker. A veteran of several wars, the B-52 has dropped only conventional munitions in combat. The B-52's official name Stratofortress is rarely used; informally, the aircraft has become commonly referred to as the BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fucker/Fella). The B-52 has been in service with the USAF since 1955. As of June 2019, there are 76 aircraft in inventory; 58 operated by active forces (2nd Bomb Wing and 5th Bomb Wing), 18 by reserve forces (307th Bomb Wing), and about 12 in long-term storage at the Davis-Monthan AFB Boneyard. The bombers flew under the Strategic Air Command (SAC) until it was disestablished in 1992 and its aircraft absorbed into the Air Combat Command (ACC); in 2010, all B-52 Stratofortresses were transferred from the ACC to the new Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC). Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept them in service despite the advent of later, more advanced strategic bombers, including the Mach 2+ B-58 Hustler, the canceled Mach 3 B-70 Valkyrie, the variable-geometry B-1 Lancer, and the stealth B-2 Spirit. The B-52 completed 60 years of continuous service with its original operator in 2015. After being upgraded between 2013 and 2015, the last airplanes are expected to serve into the 2050s. When the B-52 entered into service, the Strategic Air Command (SAC) intended to use it to deter and counteract the vast and modernizing Soviet Union's military. As the Soviet Union increased its nuclear capabilities, destroying or "countering" the forces that would deliver nuclear strikes (bombers, missiles, etc.) became of great strategic importance. The Eisenhower administration endorsed this switch in focus; the President in 1954 expressing a preference for military targets over civilian ones, a principle reinforced in the Single Integrated Operation Plan (SIOP), a plan of action in the case of nuclear war breaking out. Throughout the Cold War, B-52s and other US strategic bombers performed airborne alert patrols under code names such as Head Start, Chrome Dome, Hard Head, Round Robin and Giant Lance. Bombers loitered at high altitude near the borders of the Soviet Union to provide rapid first strike or retaliation capability in case of nuclear war. These airborne patrols formed one component of the US's nuclear deterrent, which would act to prevent the breakout of a large-scale war between the US and the Soviet Union under the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction. This 31-second movie clip shows the B-52B Space Shuttle Drag Chute Test #6. NASA obtained a B-52H bomber from the U.S. Air Force in 2001, intending to use the aircraft as an air-launch and testbed aircraft to support NASA, Air Force, and industry flight research and advanced technology demonstration efforts at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center (now Armstrong), Edwards, CA. The B-52H replaced Dryden's famous B-52B "008" following that aircraft's retirement on Dec. 17, 2004. However, with no research projects requiring its capabilities on the horizon under NASA's restructured aeronautics research programs, the decision was made to return the aircraft to the Air Force. NASA's venerable B-52B launch aircraft, operated by the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, participated in some of the most significant projects in aerospace history. At retirement in December 2004, the air launch and research aircraft held the distinction of being NASA's oldest aircraft, as well as being the oldest B-52 on flying status. At the same time, it had the lowest number of flying hours (2443.8) of any B-52 in operation, having been used exclusively in the role it continued to perform so reliably for nearly 50 years. (1990) More information on the B-52 is available here: 🤍

Here is the investigation report on the crash 🤍 On Friday, 24 June 1994, a United States Air Force (USAF) Boeing B-52 Stratofortress crashed at Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, United States, after the pilot, Lt Col Arthur "Bud" Holland, maneuvered the bomber beyond its operational limits and lost control. The aircraft stalled, fell to the ground, and exploded, killing Holland and the other three USAF officers aboard. The crash was captured on video and was shown repeatedly on news broadcasts throughout the world.[1] The subsequent investigation concluded that the crash was attributable primarily to three factors: Holland's personality and behavior, USAF leaders' delayed or inadequate reactions to earlier incidents involving Holland, and the sequence of events during the aircraft's final flight. The crash is now used in military and civilian aviation environments as a case study in teaching crew resource management. It is also often used by the U.S. Armed Forces during aviation safety training as an example of the importance of compliance with safety regulations and correcting the behavior of anyone who violates safety procedures. 🤍. Buying or selling a home in the DFW area? Give us a call. THERE WERE NO SURVIVORS: PILOT HOTDOGGING B-52 JET AT AIRSHOW. A TOTAL STALL LOW TO GROUND. NO CHANCE TO RECOVER. At Fairchild airforce base. The B-52 Stratofortress has no ailerons as they would cause excessive twisting of the highly flexible wing. It achieves roll control entirely through spoilerons mounted near the center of the wing in about the same place as most gliders. Therefore in this situation when the plane banks to the left the pilot uses full right spoilerons therefore increasing and losing more lift in this critical situation

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber. The B-52 was designed and built by Boeing, which has continued to provide support and upgrades. It has been operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since the 1950s. The bomber is capable of carrying up to 70,000 pounds (32,000 kg) of weapons.[4] Beginning with the successful contract bid in June 1946, the B-52 design evolved from a straight wing aircraft powered by six turboprop engines to the final prototype YB-52 with eight turbojet engines and swept wings. The B-52 took its maiden flight in April 1952. Built to carry nuclear weapons for Cold War-era deterrence missions, the B-52 Stratofortress replaced the Convair B-36. A veteran of several wars, the B-52 has dropped only conventional munitions in combat. The B-52's official name Stratofortress is rarely used; informally, the aircraft has become commonly referred to as the BUFF The B-52 has been in active service with the USAF since 1955. As of 2012, 85 were in active service with nine in reserve. The bombers flew under the Strategic Air Command (SAC) until it was inactivated in 1992 and its aircraft absorbed into the Air Combat Command (ACC); in 2010 all B-52 Stratofortresses were transferred from the ACC to the new Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC). Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept the B-52 in service despite the advent of later, more advanced aircraft, including the canceled Mach 3 B-70 Valkyrie, the variable-geometry B-1 Lancer, and the stealth B-2 Spirit. The B-52 completed fifty years of continuous service with its original operator in 2005; after being upgraded between 2013 and 2015, it is expected to serve into the 2040s. A Day in the Life of the B-52. Takes a look at what it takes to get a B-52 from the ground to the air. Stringer has Air Traffic Control and B-52 Takeoff. The 96th Bomb Squadron takes flight during a B-52 training mission at Barksdale Air Force Base, La. Scenes include aerial refueling, low level flying and aircraft ops. Produced by Tech. Sgt. Rebecca Zannetti. Utah Air National Guard members from the 191st Air Refueling Squadron maintain proficiency. The crewmembers of the KC-135 Stratotanker refuel a B-52 Stratofortress from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. Imagery of B-52's landing and taking off during EXERCISE VIGILANT SHIELD FTX 2014. B-roll footage of B-52 crew inspects the bomb bay prior to take off at Barksdale Air Force Base, La. Produced by Airman 1st Class Antonio Gonzalez. VERY RARE footage of "C" model B-52s. Also here is some rare footage of the 1st "A" model (52-001) taxiing at Boeing Field, plus the usual "B" model "Stock footage" during the take-off sequences. Only 35 of the "C" model were produced, and served just two SAC wings from 1956-71. Most of these were quickly replaced by the "D" model (170 built) with the "C" being fanned out to various SAC wings as trainers. A few B-52Cs remained flying for a few years longer; the last aircraft to be withdrawn ended its flying career with the AFFTC at Edwards AFB in July of 1975. This is a time capsule from the height of the Cold War. In this detailed reenactment, Major Paul Dobbins and the crew of B-52G “Buzz Saw 48” are put on “Airborne Alert,” the highest stage of readiness during a crisis for SAC's strategic bombers in the early 1960s. Armed with a pair of nuclear tipped “Hound Dog” AGM-28 long range supersonic missiles, a load of A-Bombs and ADM-20 “Quail” jet powered decoys designed to fool enemy radars, they're sent to a predetermined patrol area near the Arctic Circle. They're on station for 24 hours, ready to attack their targets at a moments notice if they receive an executive order “Go Code,” even before U.S. ICBMs are launched. You'll also meet the rest of Buzz Saw's crew and learn their duties, hear communications with “Crow's Nest,” SAC Headquarters in Omaha, NE, and get a look at their top secret “Big Board,' used to track bombers on station at the top of the World. You'll see readiness training and a step by step simulated of strike mission if the Stratofortress had been ordered to attack, including rare footage of a Quail decoy launch. And just as important, you'll see the layer's of “Fail Safe” procedures employed to guard against an accidental attack.
